VALORANT Economy Explained: What to Buy Every Round
The VALORANT buy system in plain terms: kill and round rewards, loss bonuses, the 9,000 cap, and the rules that decide whether you buy or save.
The economy is the part of VALORANT that quietly decides more rounds than aim does. A team that buys well wins rounds it had no business winning, and a team that misreads its bank loses rounds it should have closed. This guide explains the credit numbers Riot publishes and the round-by-round logic that turns them into a buy or a save.
If you are still learning the ladder, our ranked guide explains how economy interacts with RR, and the VALORANT hub covers the rest.
What every action is worth
These are the credit values Riot uses in the buy phase:
| Action | Credits |
|---|---|
| Kill (per enemy) | 200 |
| Plant the spike | 300 |
| Round win | 3,000 |
| Loss bonus, 1st consecutive loss | 1,900 |
| Loss bonus, 2nd consecutive loss | 2,400 |
| Loss bonus, 3rd+ consecutive loss | 2,900 |
| Survivor on the losing team | 1,000 |
| Credit cap | 9,000 |
The loss bonus is the key number players miss. It climbs the more rounds you lose in a row, which means the team that is behind often has the most money — so a “save” round while you are on a loss streak is usually the wrong call.
Overtime starts both teams at 5,000
In overtime, both teams begin each round with a fixed 5,000 credits rather than carrying their economy over. That flattens the gap and makes individual rounds more about execution than bank size.
Full buy, eco, and force buy
- Full buy: rifle, heavy armor, and your full ability loadout. You do this when your team has the credits and the round matters.
- Eco or save round: deliberately buy little or nothing so the next round is a guaranteed full buy. You do this when you are broke and the current round is likely lost.
- Force buy: a half-buy (one rifle, light armor, maybe one ability) when your loss bonus is high. Because the loss bonus can reach 2,900, a forced round is often correct when you are on a streak of losses — you have the credits to make it hurt.
The right-click buy for a teammate
You can buy a weapon for a teammate directly from the buy menu by right-clicking the weapon while hovering their slot. This is how a team funnels credits to a player who is broke but whose agent needs a rifle this round. It is one of the most underused mechanics in low-rank play.
The mistake that costs rounds
The classic error is saving while on a loss streak. You are already at a 2,900 loss bonus, which means you can force or full buy and still have a full buy next round anyway. Saving in that spot just hands the enemy a free round. Read your loss bonus before you default to saving.
Like other competitive shooters such as THE FINALS, the economy is a second game layered on top of the gunfight — learn it and you win rounds you statistically should not.
