France Ground Tree Order: Oscillating Turrets

France's tree hands you weak interwar tanks until the lend-lease Shermans arrive. Where the AMX-13 and AMX-50 autoloaders start paying off, and what to skip

France’s ground tree has a shape no other nation has. Your first two ranks are interwar hulls with weak guns, and the vehicles that actually carry you through mid tier are lend-lease American designs marked with a ▄ in the research screen: ▄M3A3 Stuart, ▄M4A1, ▄M4A4, ▄M10, ▄M36B2 and ▄M26. Players who skip those because “that isn’t French iron” end up grinding the hardest stretch of the tree with the worst toolset in it.

Take the lend-lease line first. The oscillating-turret AMX line only starts paying off from AMX-13 (Rank IV), and even then only once you are firing the cartridges that make French guns competitive — the AMX-13 (FL11) already shows why: its default M72 AP carries only 91 mm of penetration at 10 m, while the unlockable M61 APCBC reaches 104 mm at the same range and still holds 68 mm at 2,000 m. Same gun, same turret, completely different vehicle.

The order that actually works

PhaseVehicles in orderHow you play them
1AMD.35 / AMR.35 ZT3 → H.39 → S.35 → D2Wheeled scouts first. Small silhouette and speed let you hit flanks, because frontal duels are lost before they start
2▄Crusader Mk.II → ▄M3A3 Stuart → B1 bis → B1 terThe first rank where France stops hurting. Use the Stuart’s mobility, then learn slow heavy play on the B1 hulls
3▄M4A1 (FL10) / M4A4 (SA50) → ARL-44 (ACL-1) → AMX-13 (FL11)French 75 mm guns on Sherman hulls. This is where the tree teaches the burst-and-relocate loop cheaply
4AMX-13 → AMX-13 (SS.11) → ELC bis → AMX-13-90Real autoloader play. Fire the magazine, break contact, reload out of sight
5AMX-50 (TOA100) → Somua SM → AMX-30 (1972) → AMX-30B2 → AMX-32 → LeclercFunded top tier. Each step needs a working lineup behind it

Why phase 3 is the pivot. ▄M4A1 (FL10) and ▄M4A4 (SA50) put French 75 mm cannons into Sherman hulls, which means you get the full French gun and a turret that traverses quickly, without paying for an autoloader you do not yet know how to use. Treat them as the training ground for everything with an oscillating turret.

Why the ELC bis earns a slot. It carries a competitive 75 mm on a hull small enough to vanish behind cover most vehicles cannot use. It has no business surviving a hit, so play it as an ambush gun, not a scout that takes shots on the move.

What the oscillating turret changes about your aim

An oscillating turret moves the whole upper assembly to elevate the gun, so you get generous depression without a tall turret — good for ridge work. The trade is that everything critical sits in that assembly, and the reload logic is burst-based.

The AMX-13 (HOT) shows the ceiling clearly: a 75 mm SA50 autoloader with 36 rounds, of which 12 sit in the first-order rack at a 5-second cycle, plus six HOT missiles with 700 mm of penetration. That is a vehicle that kills quickly and then becomes a slow-loading box, which is why the loop is fire-and-withdraw rather than sustained fire.

Three misjudgements that cost players a season

  1. Grinding the domestic Rank I–II line out of pride. Those hulls are the weakest opening in the game. Take the lend-lease detour; nothing you learn in the S.35 transfers, while everything you learn in the Sherman does.
  2. Jumping from AMX-13 straight into the AMX-50 heavies. Heavy repair bills plus a playstyle you have not learned yet is the standard way French players go broke. Fill the mid band first.
  3. Treating the AMX-30 ACRA as a front-line MBT. Its 142 mm smoothbore launches the ACRA missile with 800 mm of penetration out past 3 km, but it shares the AMX-30 (1972)‘s thin protection, fires roughly four missiles per minute, and has no rapid-fire anti-aircraft gun — only a rifle-calibre weapon on the commander’s cupola. It is a second-line shooter, not a brawler.

Decision rules

  • If your last three matches ended with you caught mid-reload, you skipped a band — go back one phase and practice breaking contact.
  • If you cannot name the cover you will retreat to before you fire, do not fire.
  • Once the AMX-13’s reload feels comfortable, move up; before that, no amount of new hulls helps.
  • Research the M61 APCBC-style unlocks before judging any French gun. Stock ammunition verdicts are wrong verdicts.

Keep the finished garage inside one BR step using lineup BR spread, and read what an uptier costs before chasing the next phase. If France is your first nation, check it against first vehicle criteria first.
