Helicopter BR Progression: Pacing the Grind
Advance the helicopter tree one rank at a time and keep your lineup inside one battle rating — a pacing framework, with real starters like the UH-1, AH-1, Mi-24 and Ka-50.
Helicopter progression punishes impatience more than most lines, because a new helicopter without modifications performs far below its potential and its repair bill arrives regardless. The correct pace is boring: one rank at a time, modifications before purchases, and a lineup that always fights inside one battle rating.
The vehicles you will actually fly
The line is long, but the early ranks repeat the same two roles — learn them on cheap hulls before chasing the famous ones:
| Rank tier | Real example | What it teaches |
|---|---|---|
| Early (scout / light) | UH-1 Huey, SA.342 Gazelle, Bo 105 | Spotting, rockets, cheap second life |
| Early (gunship) | AH-1 Cobra, Mi-24 Hind | ATGM tank-killing, cannon work |
| Late (high-performer) | Ka-50 Black Shark, Mi-28, A129 Mangusta | Fast coaxial ATGM platforms, higher repair bills |
The Ka-50 is the standout late vehicle: fast, coaxial, ATGM-loaded, and able to fly alone — but it has no door gunner and a steep repair cost, so it belongs at the end of the grind, not the start.
The pacing loop
| Stage | Goal | Exit criteria |
|---|---|---|
| New rank entered | Research the next helicopter’s key modifications | Essential upgrades done |
| Next helicopter purchased | Fly it until its handling is automatic | You hover and land without thinking |
| Lineup filled | Both or three slots filled at the same BR | Backups exist for the primary |
| Move to next rank | Only when the current lineup is complete | Current BR feels routine, not desperate |
The loop never changes; only the vehicles do. What changes over time is the repair bill and the opponent quality — both rise together, which is why the exit criteria are about your competence, not the vehicle.
Battle rating discipline
The single most common progression error is a lineup that spans two BR steps. Matchmaking will place you at the top of your range, where your cheapest vehicles are helpless and your best vehicle fights above its rank. Keep the lineup tight:
- Check every vehicle’s BR before buying — battle rating explained.
- Understand what an uptier actually does to your match — uptier and downtier.
- Fill slots at the same BR before reaching for the next rank.
A tight, fully modified lineup at a lower BR beats a loose lineup with one good vehicle at a higher one, every time, because you actually get to fly what you researched.
Modifications before the next purchase
This is the rule that separates efficient progression from stalled progression. The new helicopter’s purchase price is small next to what its key modifications cost — and the unmodified vehicle is a different aircraft from the modified one. Research the modifications that change handling, survivability, and weapon performance first; the exact list varies per vehicle, so read the modification list and prioritise by what your playstyle needs rather than by what the tree offers first.
The economy guardrail
Helicopter repair costs climb with rank, and the vehicles you most want to fly are often the most expensive. Before each new purchase, compare the repair cost against your recent income per battle. If losses now outpace your good sorties, the correct move is not to grind harder — it is to fly a cheaper vehicle at the current BR until the economy stabilizes.
The long view
The helicopter line is long by design; every rank adds vehicles, and the balance at each rank shifts. Pilots who treat each rank as a place to get good, rather than a toll booth to pass, arrive at higher ranks with the skills those ranks demand. Pace yourself, keep the lineup tight, and let modifications — not the next unlock — be the thing you are always working toward. The first lineup guide covers how to build the lineup this page tells you to keep tight.
