Israel Ground Tree Order: Modification Value
Israel's ground tree starts at Rank IV, so every vehicle arrives into modern fights already. What the Magach and Merkava lines give you, and where to spend modifications
Israel is the only nation whose ground tree starts halfway up. There is no Rank I. The first Israeli ground vehicles sit at Rank IV — M-51, Magach 1, Magach 2, Sho’t, Tiran 4, alongside the French-built AMX-13 and AML-90 — which means every match you play for Israel is already a mid-tier match, with stabilisers, APFSDS and missile threats present from your very first spawn.
Before any research planning, understand what that unlocks: you need Rank IV vehicles elsewhere to open Israel at all. This is not a first nation, and it is not a nation you try out cheaply.
The tree, rank by rank
| Rank | Vehicles | What they are for |
|---|---|---|
| IV | M-51, Magach 1, Magach 2, Sho’t, Tiran 4, AMX-13, AML-90 | Your entry point. Rebuilt foreign hulls with real guns and thin protection |
| V | Magach 3, Magach 5, Magach 6, Magach 6A, Tiran 4S, Sho’t Kal Alef | Where the 105 mm gun line matures and protection packages start appearing |
| VI | Sho’t Kal Dalet, Magach 6R / 6B / 6M / 6C, Magach Hydra, Gal Batash, Machbet, Merkava Mk.1B / Mk.2B / Mk.2D | The first Merkavas plus the most modified Magachs |
| VII | Merkava Mk.3B / Mk.3C, Namer 30, Ra’am Sagol | Modern protection and fire control |
| VIII | Merkava Mk.4B / Mk.4 LIC / Mk.4M, Namer Tsrikhon | Top of the tree |
Why modification matters more here than anywhere else
In most trees, a stock vehicle is a weakened version of itself. In Israel, most vehicles are rebuilt foreign hulls — old chassis given new armour packages, guns, fire control and engines. The whole point of the vehicle is what was bolted on, and Bolts-on are what modifications represent.
So price the modifications, not the hull. Before researching anything, open its modification list and check where the useful parts sit. If the parts that make it work are late in the tree, the vehicle’s real cost is much higher than its research price. If they come early, it is a bargain.
This is also why the tree punishes spreading across three BR bands at once. Every band you touch needs its own modification budget, and you start with no cheap line to earn it on.
What the Merkava line changes for you
The Merkava family is the reason to be here, and it plays differently from everything below it.
The front-mounted engine layout is the difference that matters most. A frontal penetration into most MBTs kills crew or ammunition; into a Merkava it frequently kills the engine instead. You may be immobilised, but you are alive and shooting — so a frontal hit that would have ended another tank becomes a repairable one, provided you are not alone.
That changes how you angle and where you stand. Instead of protecting turret crew above everything else, Merkava drivers can afford to trade frontal hits for engine damage, which makes them unusually forgiving in hull-down and ridge work — not because they are armoured everywhere, but because the thing they lose first is the thing they least need.
The earlier Merkavas (Mk.1B, Mk.2B) still carry 105 mm guns and should be driven like improved Magachs. From the Mk.3B onward you are in genuinely modern MBT territory, and the Mk.4 variants are the tree’s endgame.
Three misjudgements
- Treating Israel as a starter nation. It starts at Rank IV. Your first match will include stabilised opponents you have no ranking experience against if this is your second tree.
- Researching ahead of modifications. Unmodified Israeli hulls are the vehicles players call bad. Modified ones are why the tree exists.
- Driving Merkava like a Magach. Front-engine survivors reward holding a position after you are hit; not everyone understands they are now a stationary gun rather than a dead tank.
Decision rules
- Do not open Israel until another nation has given you Rank IV experience.
- Budget modifications into the vehicle’s real price before you queue it stock.
- Research one line through one band fully modified before touching the next; why repair costs scale explains what a half-modified garage costs.
- In a Merkava, surviving a frontal hit with a dead engine is still winning the exchange — hold and shoot.
Finish with lineup BR spread to keep everything inside one band, and check how BR decides matches before adding anything above your core.
