War Thunder Research Time: Estimate Any Unlock

Divide a vehicle's research cost by your average points per match, then multiply by matches per hour to get a realistic unlock estimate.

Forum posts love to quote unlock times: “this tank takes forty hours.” Those numbers assume the poster’s premium status, vehicle choice, and performance. Your number will differ. The fix is to compute your own with a two-line formula and two numbers you can read off your own results screens.

The formula

Matches needed = research cost of the target / your average research points per match

Time needed = matches needed / your matches per hour

That is the whole model. Everything else is refining the inputs.

Getting the inputs

InputWhere it comes fromNotes
Research costTech tree, in-gameChanges with updates; check the live value
Average RP per matchYour recent results screensUse your last 10-20 matches, not your best one
Matches per hourMode-dependentArcade matches are short; Realistic matches are long

A worked example with placeholder numbers: if a vehicle costs 100,000 RP to research and you average 5,000 RP per match, you need 20 matches. If you play 4 matches per hour, that is 5 hours. Replace those numbers with your own and the estimate is yours, not a stranger’s.

Improving the inputs

Three levers raise average RP per match, in order of accessibility:

  1. Activity and survival. Rewards scale with both. Staying alive and staying busy is worth more than any purchase.
  2. Premium account. Raises the reward side of every match — the premium account framework covers the payback math.
  3. Talismans. A talismaned vehicle earns bonus research points, so grinding in a talismaned vehicle accelerates its own line. See how talismans work.

Note that levers 2 and 3 shrink the estimated time but cost money. Use the formula before and after to see whether the purchase actually saves you a meaningful number of sessions.

Using the estimate for decisions

The formula answers more than “how long.” It answers:

  • Should I start a new nation? Multiply the full tree’s cost by your per-match rate and compare against your weekly playtime — the framework in starting a new nation uses exactly this.
  • Is this vehicle worth grinding? A long estimate for a vehicle you will not enjoy is a signal to reroute your research.
  • Am I on track? Track your weekly RP total for a few weeks; the trend beats any single-session number.

Caveats

The estimate is a planning tool, not a promise. Research costs change with updates, your RP per match swings with match quality, and any event bonus can temporarily distort the rate. Treat the output as “sessions of play,” round generously, and re-run the formula whenever the game updates its economy.
