Best Close-Range Weapons in Apex: SMGs and Shotguns
Most Apex fights break close. The SMGs and shotguns that win hipfire brawls — R-99, Volt, Prowler, EVA-8, Peacekeeper — and which maps they dominate.
Despite the sniper hype, most Apex kills happen inside a doorway. On tight maps the close-range loadout decides fights. Here is the shortlist.
SMGs — the default close-range answer
- R-99 — the fastest raw time-to-kill on the ground even after the Season 30 damage trim; tight, laser-like recoil (see the recoil guide). Its small magazine is the tax.
- Volt — easy to control and now benefits from the energy ammo rework (self-regen ammo). The beginner-friendly SMG.
- Prowler — strong in burst mode; a sleeper pick that out-sustains in extended brawls.
- C.A.R. / Alternator — versatile and consistently high on the tier list; C.A.R. adapts to ammo type.
Shotguns — the panic brawl
- EVA-8 — full-auto, forgiving, common. The “someone ran at me” gun.
- Peacekeeper — high-burst slug shotgun; one good pellet string ends a close fight. Usually ground-loot, occasionally care-package (check the care package guide for the current rotation).
- Mastiff — powerful spread, strong but ammo-hungry.
Which map rewards them
Close-range guns dominate E-District’s dense city and the vertical POIs of World’s Edge (see landing spots). On open Storm Point you’ll want a sniper backup instead (see best sniper).
The decision
Carry an SMG as your close-range anchor — R-99 if you can control it, Volt if you’re still learning. Add a shotgun only when you expect hipfire brawls (city maps, final circles). New players should start from the best guns for beginners before optimizing for range.
