How to Get Smoke Assists in BF6 (Support Challenge)
Smoke assists aren't earned by throwing smoke. What the game actually counts, the mistakes that waste every canister, and where to farm them.
Here’s the trap before anything else: smoke assists are not awarded for throwing smoke. They’re awarded for a teammate killing someone inside a screen you placed well, and the game never explains that.
So players spam canisters into the sky, get nothing for a whole match, and decide the challenge is bugged.
Counts vs. doesn’t count
| This counts | This doesn’t |
|---|---|
| A teammate downs an enemy while your smoke is blocking that enemy’s view | Throwing smoke into open ground where nobody is fighting |
| Smoke laid on an enemy sightline before your squad pushes it | Smoke dropped after the fight is decided |
| Re-smoking a lane so the screen is still up when the next push lands | Smoke thrown on your own squad, blinding them instead |
| Smoking between a downed ally and the shooter during a revive | One canister that fades before anyone moves |
The pattern is simple. You’re rewarded for removing enemy vision during a fight, not for producing smoke.
The second trap: you need the launcher first
The M320A1 SMK smoke launcher isn’t a starting gadget. It comes from Support’s first class challenge, which asks you to heal teammates for a chunk of health and earn score as Support.
Plain smoke grenades will get you assists too, but they’re slower and you’ll run dry. If you’re working the unlock order, sort the healing step first — the classes guide lists the Support track in sequence.
The 50-smoke-assist requirement sits further down that same track, so expect to live in this role for a while.
Four mistakes that waste every canister
- Smoking your own feet. Throw forward onto the angle the enemy is watching, not onto your squad.
- Smoking late. If the enemy is already dead, the screen did nothing.
- Assuming one is enough. Screens fade, so refresh the lane instead of trusting one canister for a push.
- Smoking nothing. Cover with no fight under it is decoration.
Where to farm them
Breakthrough is the reliable answer. Attackers and defenders collide at the same doors and sectors every match, so you can pre-smoke the angles before your team arrives.
Rush works the same way, and Conquest is decent if you pick one contested flag and work its approach lanes rather than wandering.
Pushing with a friendly tank is underrated: smoke the anti-tank sightlines in front of it and the chaos usually produces several assists per screen.
For general objective flow, the Conquest and Breakthrough guide is worth a read alongside this.
If the number refuses to move
Some players report Support challenges tracking badly, the same way the healing challenge does for some accounts. Before you grind for an hour, make sure the counter moves at all.
If it’s stuck and you’ve confirmed you’re doing the right thing, that’s an EA-side bug and there’s no workaround — you wait for a fix.
While you’re playing the long game, keep an ammo bag down near your smoke. You’ll pick up resupply progress on the same lives, and squad play basics covers the rest of what Support should be doing between pushes.
