BO7 Zombies Pack-a-Punch: Cost and the Free Upgrade

How much Pack-a-Punch costs in BO7 Zombies (5,000 Essence for the first tier) and the repeatable free-PaP trick using Toxic Growth and green plants.

Pack-a-Punch is the backbone of Black Ops 7 Zombies — it’s what turns a wall weapon into something that survives deep rounds. The machine upgrade is expensive early, but Ashes of the Damned has a repeatable trick that gets you a free tier without spending a point of Essence.

The standard Pack-a-Punch

The first upgrade from a Pack-a-Punch machine costs 5,000 Essence. That single number shapes your whole early game: five thousand Essence is also roughly a perk, a door, and a second weapon combined. Most players are better off spending their early Essence on survival first — see our Zombies perks guide for why a health perk should usually come before your first PaP.

Note that PaP is tied to the weapon you’re holding and applies within the match. If you want a mobile option that doesn’t chain you to the machine, the Ol’ Tessie upgrade path builds a drivable Pack-a-Punch that follows you around the map.

The free Pack-a-Punch trick

On Ashes of the Damned you can skip the 5,000 Essence entirely, and it’s repeatable:

  1. Unlock and equip Toxic Growth. This field upgrade unlocks at player level 29. Slot it into your Zombies loadout before the match.
  2. Grab a fumigator. It’s a small tank with a hose, found as a world pickup — one sits in the barn at Vandorn Farm near the power switch. It stays with you for the session once picked up.
  3. Find the green plants. Small orb-like bulbs in grassy areas (around the farm). Before you pick up a fumigator they’re inert; after that you can interact with them.
  4. Grow one with Toxic Growth. Use the fumigator on a plant, then activate Toxic Growth on it. The plant rapidly matures, and when fully grown it can spit out a Raw Aetherium Crystal.
  5. Take the crystal. Picking it up instantly applies a Pack-a-Punch tier to the gun in your hands — no Essence spent.

The catches

  • It’s RNG. The plant doesn’t always drop a crystal, and zombies can destroy the plant before it matures. Start growing at the start of a round so you’re not fighting a full horde while you wait.
  • It’s for the gun you’re holding. Plan which weapon you want long-term — a strong AR or shotgun — before you grab the crystal.
  • It recharges. Once Toxic Growth is ready again and the plants respawn, you can run the trick a second time for another weapon.

When to pay vs when to use the trick

Early game, the free trick is almost always better: it saves 5,000 Essence you can spend on a perk, a door, or a backup weapon. The crystal usually grants a Tier I PaP and very rarely a higher tier, so once you’re established and want a guaranteed upgrade on a specific gun, the machine is the reliable option.
