BO7 Overclocks: What Each Does and How to Unlock
BO7 Overclocks only affect Lethal, Tactical, Field Upgrades and Scorestreaks. How to unlock each tier, equip one, and why guns and perks don't use them.
Overclock is one of the biggest loadout changes in Black Ops 7, and the most common confusion around it is simple: players open their gun or a perk and find no Overclock slot. That is by design. This guide explains exactly what Overclock touches, how the tiers unlock, how to equip one, and what to do when “my overclock isn’t working” — the question players keep asking because the system is explained poorly in menus.
What Overclock touches (and what it doesn’t)
Overclock applies to four categories of gear only:
- Lethal equipment (frag, sticky, combat axe, cluster, etc.)
- Tactical equipment (stun, flash, stim, EMP, etc.)
- Field Upgrades (Trophy System, Active Camo, Assault Pack, etc.)
- Scorestreaks (UAV, RC-XD, Care Package, etc.)
It does not apply to weapons or perks:
- Guns are upgraded through attachments and Weapon Prestige, not Overclock. See our BO7 Weapon Prestige guide for what resets and what you keep.
- Perks are upgraded through Combat Specialties, not Overclock. See our BO7 Combat Specialties guide for how those bonuses trigger.
So if you are hunting for an Overclock option on your primary weapon or on a perk, stop — there isn’t one.
How Overclock levels work
Every eligible item has three levels:
- Level 1 — base behavior, no overclock equipped.
- Level 2 — your first overclock unlocks. It usually enhances what the item already does, lowers its score cost, or makes it more effective.
- Level 3 — a second, equally strong overclock unlocks (for scorestreaks this is often extra survivability or lethality; for equipment it is easier use, extra charges, or another buff).
You equip one overclock per item at a time — the Level 2 option or the Level 3 option, not both.
How to unlock Overclocks
You unlock them by using the item successfully. Throw grenades, use a Stim Shot, call in a UAV — each successful use builds progress toward that item’s next level. Two things to know:
- Higher scorestreaks must actually be earned in a match (through normal score or a Care Package) before you can level them. You cannot overclock a VTOL Warship you have never called in.
- Once an item reaches Level 2, you get to pick between its two overclock options.
How to equip an Overclock
The unlock and the equip are two separate steps, which is why people think theirs “isn’t working”:
- Go to the WEAPONS tab, then LOADOUT, pick a loadout, and hover the item.
- Open the Overclocks menu and select the unlocked overclock.
- Scorestreaks are equipped the same way from the SCORESTREAKS tab.
- You can change your selection any time outside a match.
- In a match, press R on keyboard (Square / X on PlayStation / Xbox) to activate the equipped overclock.
Examples by category
The full in-game list is long — every tactical, lethal, field upgrade, and scorestreak has its own pair of overclocks. These are representative, not exhaustive:
| Category | Item | Overclock 1 | Overclock 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tactical | Stim Shot | Removes player debuffs | Move-speed boost on use |
| Lethal | Frag | Higher-density, more lethal | Longer throw + cook arc indicator |
| Field Upgrade | Trophy System | Faster charge time | +2 explosive-charge ammo |
| Field Upgrade | Active Camo | Gunfire temporarily reveals you instead of ending camo | Faster charge + longer duration |
| Scorestreak | UAV | Flare vs first lock-on + bullet resistance | Lower score cost |
| Scorestreak | RC-XD | More resistant to gunfire | See occluded target indicators |
Check the in-game Overclocks menu for the complete set on each item.
Troubleshooting: “my overclock isn’t working”
- Unlocked but not active — you have to equip it in the loadout menu, not just unlock it. Open the Overclocks menu on that item and select it.
- No overclock option on my gun or perk — by design. Only Lethal, Tactical, Field Upgrades, and Scorestreaks have overclocks.
- Can’t level a high scorestreak — you must earn it in-match first; progress only starts after you call it in.
- Pressing R does nothing — confirm the overclock is equipped on the loadout you are currently using and that you are in a match.
Achievement note
The Maximum Overdrive achievement/trophy requires equipping an overclock on a Lethal, a Tactical, a Field Upgrade, and three Scorestreaks at once. That is a handy checklist if you are chasing it and a good reason to level a few scorestreaks you wouldn’t normally run.
