Two pieces or four

Four pieces from one set unlocks both bonuses. Two pieces unlocks only the first.

That sounds like four always wins, and it usually does not. A 4-piece bonus you never trigger is dead weight.

Two mismatched 2-piece bonuses you both trigger beat it. Think about what your build already does.

If you sprint constantly, a movement set pays out every few seconds. If you hold a lane in a raid, it pays nothing at all.

The old raid sets got the same treatment

Armor from older raids and dungeons was reworked into sets too. Nezarec’s Nightmare, from Root of Nightmares, grants Devour on finishers, which cuts incoming damage while it is up.

Sage Protector, from the Equilibrium dungeon, returns ability energy on sword hits and boosts sword damage after you guard. Sword builds want it.

Per Audacia is the odd one out. Its bonus is a permanent mobility and slide boost with no trigger at all, which makes it a Crucible pick.

Check each set’s second bonus on the armor screen rather than trusting a list. Bungie has retuned these before.

Pick by the content you run

Solo content rewards healing and damage resistance. Nobody is there to revive you, so a set that tops you up on kills beats extra damage.

Fireteam content rewards orbs and ammo. Anything feeding your team’s supers or special ammo compounds across six players.

Boss damage is the one case where a raw damage set wins. If your job is one damage phase, take it and wear survivability in your mods.

Pair the set with mods doing the same job. Doubling down on one thing beats spreading across three, as the buildcrafting basics guide explains.

Your exotic still anchors the build. Set bonuses sit underneath it, so choose the exotic first and the set second. The exotic armor guide covers that choice.

Weapon perks decide what the set is boosting. If your guns carry no damage perk, a damage set has less to multiply. The weapon perks guide goes through that.

Farming the right pieces is the slow part. Focus one activity at a time instead of spreading across the Portal, which the endgame grind guide covers.

One thing worth checking

Set bonuses are passive and always on. You never activate them, and they do not show up on your HUD.

That is why players wear a mismatched pile for weeks without noticing. Open your character screen and count how many pieces share a name.

Two is already doing something.
