Destiny 2 Collections: What Unlock This Item Means
What unlock this item in Collections to purchase means in Destiny 2, how Collections and the Exotic Archive differ, and how to fix it
The message stops new players cold. You try to buy a weapon from a vendor and the game says unlock this item in Collections to purchase. Here is what it actually wants.
What the message means
Collections tracks every item you have ever held. A vendor can only sell you a duplicate of something you already own. The message is the game telling you the base item is not unlocked yet.
You cannot buy your way around it. You have to earn one copy from the item’s real source first.
How to unlock the entry
The source depends on the item. Weapons drop from their activity, quest, or vendor. Cosmetics like shaders, emotes, and ships come from Eververse or events. Once a copy is in your inventory, the Collections entry lights up permanently, account-wide.
After that, duplicates cost Glimmer and Legendary Shards from the same vendor. Prices vary by item rarity.
Collections is not the Exotic Archive
Exotics behave differently. They do not sell duplicates from Collections. Old exotics come from the Monument of Triumph kiosk in the Tower instead, paid with Exotic Ciphers and materials. The Monument page has the full list and costs.
If the kiosk says you lack something, you are short on materials, not missing the item. Check for Exotic Ciphers, Ascendant Shards, and Glimmer.
Common traps
- The item never dropped for you. Farm its source instead of the vendor.
- It is an Exotic, so the vendor cannot sell it at all.
- It is a season or event item that moved to the Monument kiosk.
- You are looking at a cosmetic, which is bought with Bright Dust or Silver, not shards.
Armor appearances
Once an armor appearance is unlocked, it stays unlocked for transmog. You can apply it to any compatible piece at any time. Unlocking appearances also tidies your vault, since old gear can be dismantled once its look is recorded. The vault guide covers cleanup rules.
Where duplicates are worth it
Buy duplicates only for three reasons: infusing Power, masterworking, or completing a Collections page for a triumph. Otherwise the shards are better spent elsewhere.
