Why did your Void rounds barely dent that shield? Match Game is the answer. This modifier locks enemy shields to specific damage types. You must match the element to break the shield at all.

How Match Game works

Under Match Game, shielded enemies resist mismatched damage. Your weapon still does something, but the shield itself takes almost nothing. That forces loadout changes before you launch, not mid-fight. The modifier appears in Nightfalls and other high-difficulty content.

Grandmaster Nightfalls run with it active the whole time. Matching the element also stuns the enemy for a moment on some fights. Mismatched damage feels like shooting into a wall. Our Nightfalls guide explains where the modifier shows up.

What to bring

Bring at least one weapon for each element you expect to face. In a fireteam, split the elements so someone covers every shield. Subclass choice matters too. Energy weapons are the flexible slot, since they can hold any element.

Exotic weapons with strong elemental damage can cover a slot by themselves. Mods that add matching damage can help when your weapons cannot cover an element. Arms mods and artifact perks can add elemental damage to abilities. Our subclass guide covers which elements are easiest to slot into a build.

Our modifiers guide lists how each modifier changes an activity.

Reading the current modifiers

Modifier lists rotate, and the exact set changes over time. Check the activity’s modifier panel before you start. It tells you which elements are live and what champions you will face. The panel also shows score multipliers and champion types.

Screenshot it before you launch so you can plan in the lobby. If a modifier looks unfamiliar, test it in a lower difficulty first. Learning the rhythm in a safe tier saves a long failure loop later. The modifier never changes mid-activity, so plan once and commit.

Match Game mistakes: one-element loadouts

Running one element because it is your favorite is the fastest way to wipe. Forgetting to check the modifier panel is the second. Match Game punishes lazy loadouts more than any other modifier.

If you play solo, prioritize covering elements over chasing damage. Wipe recovery is slower when shields refuse to break.
