Destiny 2 Public Events: Heroic Triggers and Fast Rewards
How Destiny 2 public events work: patrol triggers, the heroic version, and what each event type rewards
Public events are the rotating activities that pop up on every patrol destination. They are matchmade, they take a few minutes, and they are one of the fastest ways to level a new character. Most players blunder through them without ever triggering the good version.
The basic loop
A public event starts on a timer. Fly to the marker and join whatever is happening. The standard types are defend a position, deposit relics, and kill a target. Finish the objective before the timer runs out and the event completes at tier one.
Triggering the heroic version
Every public event has a hidden heroic version. It pays noticeably better loot and a second chest. The trigger is different for each event, and it usually appears mid-fight:
- Defend events: a taken blight or servitor spawns. Kill it before the event ends.
- Deposit events: stand in the marked circles together, or grab the floating objects in the right order.
- Elimination events: a champion-style enemy spawns with a special aura. Kill it fast.
If the event completes and the announcer says “heroic,” you did it right. If not, watch for the odd enemy that spawns partway through. That is almost always the trigger.
Normal versus Heroic payouts
Normal completions pay a chest with world loot and a small XP bump. Heroic completions add a second chest and better drop rates. Public events also feed patrol destination reputation, which matters for some vendor tracks.
Farming tips
- Stay in the public event area after a heroic clear. A second event often spawns nearby.
- Use a sparrow to reach events across the map quickly.
- Run them while waiting for a fireteam to fill. They solo fine.
Public event mistakes that forfeit the heroic
- Leaving the second chest unopened after a heroic.
- Ignoring the odd spawn mid-event and losing the heroic trigger.
- Fighting the event alone when three players are standing at the edge.
For a new character the event loop is the fastest early levelling, and the New Light first steps explain why; the farm gear fast page covers the rest of the circuit.
