Destiny 2 Weapon Stats Explained: Impact, RPM & Range

Destiny 2 weapon stats explained — impact, RPM, range, stability and aim assist — and how to read them so you pick the right gun for the job.

Destiny 2 shows a wall of stats on every weapon, but most players read the wrong ones. “Impact” looks like the damage number, yet a high-Impact, low-RPM gun can lose to a lower-Impact, high-RPM one. This guide explains what each stat actually does and how to read a roll before you grind for it.

The stats that matter

  • Impact — per-shot damage. Higher means more damage per bullet, but usually lower RPM. Impact alone does not equal TTK.
  • RPM (Rate of Fire) — shots per minute. Combined with Impact, this decides your time-to-kill. A 360-RPM hand cannon hits harder per shot than a 180, but the 180 can win the duel with faster follow-ups.
  • Range — beyond the stated range, damage and aim assist fall off. Crucial for snipers and pulse/Scout rifles; nearly irrelevant for shotguns.
  • Stability — recoil control. Higher Stability means the reticle returns faster, so you land consecutive shots.
  • Handling — ready, stow, and ADS speed. Matters for swapping during DPS phases.
  • Reload — obvious, but critical in boss DPS where reload swaps are the strategy.
  • Magazine — capacity. Larger mags help sustained DPS; smaller mags force more swaps.
  • Aim Assist — how strongly the game pulls your reticle toward targets. Higher Aim Assist makes a gun feel forgiving, especially on controller.

How to read a roll

Impact + RPM = your real damage. Always think in TTK, not Impact. A 140-RPM Scout with modest Impact can out-DPS a 72-RPM slug because it fires more.

Range is a falloff line, not a bonus. Past the range stat, your damage drops and aim assist weakens. For PvP and long add-clear, prioritize Range; for boss DPS at point-blank, ignore it.

Stability and Aim Assist decide consistency. In Destiny 2, hitting every shot matters more than hitting hard. A stable, high-Aim-Assist gun often beats a higher-Impact twitchy one.

Perks beat stats. A perfect-stat roll with useless perks loses to a mid-stat roll with Reconstruction, Envious Arsenal, or Bait and Switch. Perks like those define the Destiny 2 DPS meta; the base stats just set the floor.

Example: why the same archetype feels different

Two 720-RPM autos with identical Impact can feel worlds apart if one has high Stability and Aim Assist and the other doesn’t. When comparing, weight consistency stats as heavily as the damage stats.

For boss damage specifically, base stats are secondary to the exotic effects and support buffs covered in the Destiny 2 boss DPS phases guide.

FAQ

Is higher Impact always better? No. Impact is per-shot damage; RPM and consistency usually decide the fight. Read Impact and RPM together as TTK.

Which stat matters most for boss DPS? Perks and exotic effects matter more than base stats. Reload and magazine help swap uptime, but the weapon’s special effect is the real lever.

Does Range matter for shotguns? Barely. Shotguns are point-blank; invest in Range only marginally, and prioritize handling/consistency perks instead.
