Escape from Tarkov Budget Kits: Three Tiers That Work
What a cheap kit should actually buy, in what order, and why ammunition comes before armour at every price point.
The order of spending
At every budget level, the priority order is the same: ammunition, then optic, then armour, then everything else. Most players invert it, buying armour they cannot afford and loading it with ammunition that will not penetrate anything. The reason is mechanical. A cheap rifle with good ammunition kills an armoured player. An expensive rifle with bad ammunition does not.
Tier one: the disposable kit
A cheap rifle, one spare magazine, the best penetrating ammunition you can afford, and no armour or a cheap vest. The goal is not to survive fights, it is to be able to win one if it happens. This kit exists to be lost. It should cost little enough that losing it does not change your plans, which means you can play aggressively and learn faster.
Tier two: the working kit
Add armour that stops the common ammunition you actually face, a helmet, an optic that suits the map, and enough magazines to fight twice without reloading in the open. This is the tier most players should live in. It is competitive with everything except dedicated high-tier kits, and it can be replaced from a good raid.
Tier three: the commitment kit
Heavy armour, a well-modded weapon, good optics, and enough medical supplies to survive being wounded twice. This kit is for raids where you expect to fight and where the objective justifies the risk. It should only be run when the stash can absorb losing it, because it will eventually be lost.
The support items nobody budgets
[Painkillers](/guides/eft-meds-guide/), a splint, a tourniquet, and a cheap backpack. These cost very little and they are the difference between surviving a wound and dying to it twenty metres later. A kit with a good rifle and no medical supplies is a kit that ends on the first bad engagement.
Upgrades that are not worth it early
Cosmetic weapon mods that only improve ergonomics slightly. Expensive helmets that stop one specific ammunition type. Anything that makes the kit harder to replace without changing what it can do.
The test
Ask what the kit can do that the tier below cannot. If the answer is “survive one more bullet”, it may be worth it. If the answer is “look better”, it is a donation to whoever kills you.
