Escape from Tarkov Helmets: What They Actually Stop

A helmet stops what it covers, and most cover less than you think. Ricochet, face shields, hearing loss and the helmets worth replacing.

What the coverage model means

Helmets protect the top and sides of the head depending on the model and any attachments. The face, jaw and neck are separate zones. That is why a helmet can stop a rifle round from a hilltop and still let a pistol round from three metres end the raid through the ear or the jaw. Any helmet with a face shield extends coverage forward — at the cost of vision, hearing, and often a lot of weight. Tarkov’s audio is directional and face shields muffle it, which matters more than the armor value in a game where hearing someone first usually decides a fight.

Ricochet is not a bug

Angled hits can deflect rather than penetrate. A round that skips off a helmet does reduced or no damage, which is why helmets feel inconsistent: they are inconsistent by design. The higher the angle, the more likely the deflection, provided the helmet’s class and durability can survive the impact. That also means a cheap helmet is not worthless. It changes the geometry of a fight even when it does not stop the round.

Durability, again

Helmet durability drops with every impact, and a damaged helmet performs below its class. Looting a helmet from a body is usually a downgrade unless you check the number first. The armor plate page makes the same point about plates, and it matters more here because helmet hits are rarer and you rarely notice the degradation.

Weight and the trade

A heavy helmet costs stamina and hearing. On a big map, stamina is the resource that decides whether you reach the extract before the timer or before the other player. On Factory, where fights are ten metres, the heaviest helmet with a shield is worth its cost. So the answer to “which helmet” is map-shaped, not class-shaped. Small map, close fights: maximum coverage. Large map, long rotation: light helmet, and spend the weight on ammunition and a spare plate.

The honest summary

No helmet makes the head safe. What a helmet does is convert some deaths into survivals and some headshots into deflections. Buy the coverage you can replace, check durability before you equip, and treat the face shield as a hearing decision rather than an armor decision. The stash page is where three unlooted helmets end up, which is the same mistake in a different menu.
