Escape from Tarkov Reserve: Bunkers, Keys and the D-2
Reserve is a vertical map with underground loot and limited exits. How the surface, the bunker and the extracts fit together.
Two maps stacked on each other
Reserve is a military base on the surface with a large underground complex beneath it. The two layers have completely different threat profiles: the surface is open with long sightlines and roaming groups, the underground is a maze of corridors where every fight is at arm’s length. Players who treat Reserve as one map die confused. It is two maps that share a spawn point.
The surface is not the goal
The surface has loot, but its real function is transit and PvP. It is where you get shot from a tower, and where squads that spawned on opposite sides meet. The money on Reserve is underground, which is why experienced players dive early and surface late.
Keys are the economy
Reserve’s underground is gated by keys and keycards. The rooms behind those keys hold the loot that justifies the map, and the keys themselves are valuable items in their own right. This creates a two-tier experience: a player with the right keys has a reason to be here, a player without them is farming the same generic containers as anywhere else but with worse exits.
The extracts are the design problem
Reserve’s exits are the most constrained in the game. Some are limited-use, some require items or a specific condition, and some are simply slow. That scarcity is the map’s defining feature. The result is that Reserve is a map about leaving, not about looting. Plan the exit before you plan the route, and if the exit condition cannot be met, leave early rather than late.
Verticality and sound
Because the complex is stacked, sound does not tell you what floor a player is on. Footsteps overhead and footsteps under your feet are ambiguous, and that ambiguity gets players killed in stairwells. The counter is to hold the top of a stairwell rather than descend it. Whoever is above the stairs has the advantage, in Reserve more than anywhere else.
Who Reserve suits
It suits players with keys, patience, and a squad. It punishes solos who wander underground without a plan, and it punishes anyone who treats the extracts as an afterthought.
