Escape from Tarkov Squad Play: Comms That Keep You Alive
Four players in Tarkov are four times the firepower and four times the confusion. The comms discipline that fixes it.
A squad is not four solos
Four players moving independently through Tarkov produce more noise, more contacts, and more friendly fire than four solos would. The power of a squad comes from coordination, and coordination in Tarkov means comms rather than proximity. The single biggest improvement a group can make is deciding, before the raid, who is responsible for what.
The comms format
Position, direction, distance, and identity. “Two, north side, second floor, one player” is usable. “Over there” is not. The most important word in squad comms is your own name. Hearing your own identifier tells you the message is about you, and it prevents the half-second delay where everyone assumes someone else is being addressed.
Friendly fire is the main threat
In Tarkov, a squad’s most common cause of death is each other. The mechanics that cause it are predictable: shooting at movement without identifying, holding an angle a teammate is about to cross, and stacking on the same door. The fix is a rule rather than a skill: nobody shoots without identifying, and anyone crossing a lane announces it before moving.
Formation is a spacing problem
Four players in a corridor is one grenade. The correct formation is spaced far enough that a burst cannot hit two of you, and close enough that you can support each other within a few seconds. In buildings that means one per room and a designated person on the stairs. In open ground it means a loose line with fixed left and right responsibilities.
Loot discipline
Deciding loot ownership before the raid prevents the most corrosive squad argument in the game. The usual convention is that the person who killed owns the kill, and everything else is shared. The exception worth agreeing on in advance: quest items and keys go to whoever needs them for progression, not to whoever clicked first.
When someone dies
The correct response to a squad death is not to rush the body. It is to establish where the killer is, secure the body’s location, and decide whether the kit is worth the fight. Rushing to a body is how a squad wipe happens, and it happens to experienced groups more often than beginners, because the kit on the ground looks expensive.
