Escape from Tarkov Woods: Wide Open and Unforgiving
Woods has no corridors and no cover. How to move through open terrain, where the fights start, and why a scope is not optional.
The map with no walls
Woods is mostly open terrain: tree lines, clearings, and a few built-up areas. There are no corridors forcing movement, which means there are no natural ambush points either, and the entire map becomes a sightline problem. That is the opposite of Customs. On Customs you plan around buildings. On Woods you plan around the fact that being seen at sixty metres is usually fatal.
The sawmill
The sawmill is the map’s centre of gravity: loot, a boss, and a lot of open approach. Everything about Woods funnels toward it or away from it. Approaching the sawmill means crossing open ground. Do it inside a treeline, do it slowly, and assume someone is already watching the obvious approach.
Cover is small and it is everything
A tree is cover for one person if they stand behind the trunk. A rock is cover if you crouch. There is no building to fall back to, so fights become a sequence of short, careful movements between small pieces of cover. This is why armour matters less here than on other maps and a good scope matters more. The fight is usually over before anyone is close.
Movement discipline
Never cross a clearing in a straight line at a run. Break your crossing with stops behind cover, and use the terrain folds rather than the terrain features. Sound carries in open ground. Sprinting through a forest is audible well beyond visual range, which means the fight starts before you see anyone.
Who Woods suits
It suits players with a scoped rifle, patience, and the discipline not to shoot at everything that moves. It punishes players who need buildings to feel safe, and it punishes anyone who sprints across clearings. It is also the best map for learning to read terrain, because there is nothing else to read.
Getting out
Exits are spread around the perimeter, and the distances are long. A Woods raid should be planned backwards: decide the exit, then find loot along a route that ends there, rather than looting until the timer forces a sprint.
