Escape from Tarkov Sniping: Zeroing, Position and Patience
A bolt-action rifle is a positioning tool, not a damage tool. How zeroing works and why the first shot decides the fight.
The rifle is a commitment
A bolt-action rifle fires once, then takes time to cycle. In a game where most engagements are decided in the first two seconds, that means a bolt gun is a commitment to a fight you must win on the first shot. Everything about playing one follows from that: you pick positions that let you shoot first, and you leave positions after shooting because you are now the one who has to cycle.
Zeroing is the skill nobody learns
Rifles have an adjustable zero, and the setting changes where the bullet lands at a given distance. Shooting at a target inside your zero range means aiming low; shooting beyond it means aiming high. Most missed sniper shots in Tarkov are zeroing errors, not aim errors. Learn two distances - your common engagement range and your zero - and the misses stop.
Bullet drop is real but secondary
Drop matters at long range, but in Tarkov the bigger variables are target movement and the fact that your target is usually partially behind cover. A perfectly zeroed shot at a moving torso at a hundred metres still misses. The counter is to shoot at people who have stopped. Which means waiting, which means patience is a mechanical requirement rather than a virtue.
Positions and the second shot
The best sniper position has three properties: it sees the objective, it has a route out that is not visible from the objective, and it is not the obvious high ground. After firing, move. Not far - to the next window, the next ridge fold - but far enough that the response arrives somewhere you are not.
Ammunition choice
Penetration matters because your target is armoured. A high-penetration round turns a body shot into a kill; a low-penetration round turns it into a wounded player who now knows where you are. This is one of the few places where ammunition cost is genuinely worth it.
When not to bring a sniper rifle
Inside buildings, on Factory, in any raid where you expect to be pushed. A bolt-action in a corridor is a five-second death. The correct use is a map with long sightlines and a squad that can hold the close range while you cover the open ground.
