How to Kill Chargers in Helldivers 2
Charger armor is AV 5 on the shell but unarmored underneath: how to bait the charge, dodge sideways, and finish it through the rear.
Why frontal fire does nothing
The Charger’s shell sits at armor value 5, while its rear and abdomen are unarmored. Under the penetration rule explained in the armor penetration guide, your weapon’s AP has to beat the target’s AV: below it you ricochet for zero, equal is a reduced 65%, and only above it do you get full damage. That is the mechanical reason magazines emptied into a Charger’s face feel wasted — you are shooting at AV 5 with something that cannot beat it. Flip the situation and it stops being a bullet sponge. Because the rear is unarmored, medium-penetration weapons already wound it there, and you do not strictly need an anti-tank call-in to solve one.
The opening you want
Let it commit to a charge, then step sideways or dive so it overshoots. A Charger turns poorly mid-charge, so lateral movement is what creates the window, and the few seconds after it blows past you are when the rear is exposed. Baiting charges from open ground is the standard way to manufacture that window deliberately. Two other routes are worth knowing. Stripping a leg’s armor and then focusing the exposed section splits the work between whoever carries the anti-heavy weapon and everyone else doing ordinary damage. Holding it still first also works — crowd control buys the seconds your flank needs, though do not attempt it while another heavy or a group of Hunters is already collapsing your formation.
What to bring
Support weapons that put a precise, heavy round into the rear — the Autocannon, Railgun, and Recoilless Rifle are the usual answers — plus grenades and Eagle or Orbital strikes, which work regardless of the angle you are standing at. Explosion behavior matters here too; see the explosion radii page for why the inner radius keeps full penetration. Two habits kill squads faster than Chargers do. Standing still is the obvious one. The second is reinforcing into one: if a teammate goes down next to an active Charger, deal with the Charger before you call them back in, or you are dropping them straight into the threat (covered in the reinforce budget guide). Spawn density and health scale with difficulty, so confirm current behavior in-game after any patch.
