Helldivers 2 Impaler: Kill the Body, Not the Tentacles

The Impaler attacks from underground at range. The tentacles are the symptom, the body is the target, and here is how to find it.

What the Impaler actually does

The Impaler does not charge. It plants itself and drives tentacles up through the ground at a distance, so the damage arrives from a direction that has nothing to do with where the creature is standing. That is the whole difficulty of the fight. You get hit by something you cannot see, you look for the source, and you find a tentacle rather than a monster.

The tentacles are a distraction with a damage bar

Each tentacle can be destroyed and each one you kill stops attacking, which makes shooting them feel productive. It is not. The creature replaces the pressure, and while you are aiming at a patch of ground you are not aiming at the thing that ends the encounter. Break a tentacle only when it is already mid-lunge and you cannot move. Otherwise treat every tentacle as a reason to relocate.

Finding the body

Follow the tentacles back to their origin. The body is a large, stationary Terminid that stays rooted while it attacks, usually a short distance behind the line the tentacles emerge from. It is not mobile during the attack. That is the opening: once you know where it is, it cannot reposition, and it cannot chase you.

What kills it

Medium or heavy penetration to the exposed flesh, which is most of its surface while it is rooted. Anti-tank is wasted here - the Impaler has no plate worth spending a rocket on - so use a support weapon with sustained medium penetration and keep firing. Incendiary and [area stratagems](/guides/helldivers-2-orbital-stratagems/) work because the body does not move out of them. A barrage dropped on a rooted Impaler is close to guaranteed.

Positioning beats damage

Stay out of the line it is working. The tentacles emerge in front of the creature along the direction it is facing, so getting onto its flank removes the threat entirely while you shoot. The other rule is do not stand still to shoot. A stationary player is the ideal target for an attack that arrives underfoot, and the telegraph is on the ground rather than in the air, so watch your feet rather than the horizon.

In a swarm

The Impaler is rarely alone, and the temptation is to ignore it while handling chaff. That is correct for about ten seconds. After that the tentacle damage stacks with everything else and the squad starts losing reinforcements to a creature nobody was looking at. Assign one player to it. One player with a medium-penetration support weapon solves the Impaler while the other three handle the breach.
