Helldivers 2 Devastators: Where to Aim and Why

Devastators are the walls of a bot position. Headshots, the rocket variant's priority, and why volume of fire does nothing to them.

The two variants

Heavy gunner. A sustained-fire walker that suppresses whatever it can see. Its job is to pin you, and it is good at it. Rocket. Fewer rounds, much more damage per hit. This is the variant that kills players who are busy with something else, and it is the higher-priority target. Both are armoured in the body, which is the key fact: shooting the torso with a low-penetration weapon does almost nothing and gives away your position.

Where to aim

The weak points are the ones that are not the torso — the head and the exposed mechanisms. This is why the armour values page matters: with the wrong round you can empty a magazine into one and watch it keep walking. Practical approach: bring penetration, aim high, and take the shot you have rather than waiting for a perfect one. A Devastator that is suppressed is not shooting your squadmate.

Why they are dangerous in pairs

One Devastator is a target. Two Devastators covering different angles is a crossfire, and a crossfire is what actually kills squads — because dealing with the first one means standing in the open for the second. So the answer is rarely “shoot it faster”. It is to break the crossfire: use a barrage, a grenade, or a flank, and accept that the position has to be reset rather than won.

What kills them efficiently

Anti-tank weapons — a rocket on a Devastator is overkill and always works. Precision primaries with penetration, which turn a Devastator into a two-shot problem. A stratagem, because an orbital strike on a bot position removes the position. Not a light rifle. The most common mistake is treating them as infantry and burning a magazine on the plate.

The priority question

In a bot fight, the correct target order is roughly: the unit calling a drop, then the rocket Devastator, then the gunner, then everything else. Getting that order wrong is why some squads kill a lot and still lose ground — see the Automaton guide for the full list, and the Hulk counter for what happens when the armoured elite arrives mid-fight.
