Helldivers 2 Illuminate: How the Faction Really Fights
Shields, flare signals and aerial insertion decide Illuminate fights, not raw damage. What each unit's weak point actually is and what to shoot first.
The faction’s two mechanics
The first is shields. Harvesters and grounded Warp Ships carry energy shields that absorb damage outright, so a Recoilless round into a shielded Harvester is a wasted round. The shield is not a stat — it is a generator you can shoot off. The second is signal. Watchers patrol, and a Watcher that spots you flares, and the flare summons Warp Ships, and the ships print more units. Nothing in the faction’s kit punishes you harder than one Watcher you did not kill in the first two seconds.
The units, and where to aim
Voteless are the swarm. They die to head shots and to anything that covers an area, and fire makes them bleed out in numbers. They are the reason your primary should be able to clear a corridor without a reload. Watchers are drones. Any weapon kills them, which is the point: the cost of ignoring one is not the drone, it is the three units it calls. Their wrecks also burst when they die, so shoot from a step further back than feels natural. Overseers are the melee unit, carrying a mace and an energy shield. Their armor is thin enough that a light-penetrating primary chews through it, and their chest is the largest target. Elevated Overseers trade the mace for a jetpack and ranged fire, and they stay airborne for as long as they want — hit the jetpack or the head. Harvesters are the tripod. The shield regenerates from the horn on top of the head; destroy the horn and the shield never comes back. Failing that, a leg joint takes them down whole. Both routes are faster than grinding the body. Warp Ships are the reinforcement engine. A grounded ship with its shield up ignores anti-tank launchers entirely, so either break the shield and shoot the warp port on the underside, or drop a barrage on it and move on.
What the loadout looks like
Stun is worth more here than raw damage. The Arc Thrower locks Watchers, Overseers and Harvesters in place, which turns an urban crossfire into a queue you can process. Bring one weapon that breaks shields quickly, one that clears Voteless volume, and keep a stratagem for the moment a ship lands. Avoid stacking single-target anti-tank. It is the correct answer against Automatons and the wrong one here, because the two things that kill you are shielded and flying respectively. The stratagem pool breakdown explains why that slot is better spent on an orbital. Armor values still decide the edges of this fight — the enemy armor values chart tells you which Illuminate parts a light-penetrating weapon can actually touch and which need something heavier.
