Helldivers 2 Stalkers: The Bug That Hunts You Back
Stalkers cloak, track the squad, and attack from behind. Why they feel unfair, and how to answer them properly instead of reacting to ambushes.
What makes them different
Three traits, and each one has a counter. They cloak. You cannot shoot what you cannot see, so the fight starts with a sound cue and a decloak rather than with a visible threat. Listening for them is a real skill in this game, and it is why the audio mix matters more against bugs than the graphics settings. They pursue. A normal patrol wanders; a Stalker group tracks. That means breaking line of sight does not lose them the way it loses a patrol, so the usual escape plan does not work. They hit hard and fast. The lunge is the attack, and it lands before you have finished turning.
The real answer
Stalkers come from a lair โ a specific spawner, not the general breach pool. Destroying it ends the problem permanently for that mission. Everything else is management. So the sequence is: notice that Stalkers are present (they announce themselves), find the lair, and make it an objective. Squads that treat the lair as optional spend the whole mission fighting reinforcements that respawn.
Fighting them in the moment
Do not chase. A decloaked Stalker that breaks contact is not gone, and following it walks you into the second one. Fight in pairs, facing different directions. The ambush works because everyone is looking at the same thing. Two players covering opposite arcs removes most of the value. Use area damage. Cloaked units still take splash, and a shot into the space where the sound came from is more reliable than aiming at an outline. Keep your back to terrain. Not to open ground, not to a doorway. Terrain behind you removes the approach vector.
Why they feel unfair
Because the counter is preparation, not reaction. A player who is surprised by a Stalker is already losing; a player who knows Stalkers are on the map has cleared the lair, keeps the squad facing outward, and never gets surprised. That is a general pattern in this game: the units that feel cheap are the ones whose answer is a side objective. The nests and spawners page is the general version of this, and the Terminid guide covers the rest of the roster.
Loadout note
A weapon that kills one target quickly beats a spray here, because a Stalker that survives the first half-second is on top of you. Pair it with something that handles the swarm that follows, because the lair is usually surrounded.
