Helldivers 2 Heavy Weapons: The Support Slot Explained
Support weapons are a stratagem slot, not a gun. What each family solves, why uptime beats damage, and how to choose without owning everything.
The four families
Machine guns. Volume and suppression. Excellent against bugs, adequate against light bots, and ineffective against armour. Their value is uptime — a machine gun that is firing is a machine gun holding a direction. Anti-tank launchers. One big hit. The answer to Hulks, Tanks, and Titans, and the reason a squad survives a heavy push. Ammunition is the constraint, so these are for the target that matters, not for infantry. Precision rifles. One target, one burst, no crowd. They delete a Devastator or a Fabricator from range and do nothing about a swarm. Energy weapons. No ammunition, heat management instead. The trade is sustainability for exposure — you cannot reload a heat sink behind cover the way you can swap a magazine.
Uptime is the real stat
New players compare damage numbers. The number that decides missions is how much of the fight the weapon is actually firing. A launcher that kills one thing per fight has low uptime. A machine gun that suppresses for thirty seconds has high uptime. Both are correct in different squads — which is why “best support weapon” has no answer without knowing the role.
Choosing without owning everything
You do not need the whole catalogue. Pick by the enemy that is killing your squad:
- Losing to armour → launcher.
- Losing to swarms → machine gun or area stratagems.
- Losing to one specific ranged unit → precision rifle.
- Running out of ammunition constantly → energy weapon or a supply pack. That logic is the same as the best weapons page uses for primaries, and it is the only ranking that survives a patch.
The ammunition tax
Support weapons with their own ammunition need resupply, which competes with the squad’s resupply stratagem. That is a real cost and it is why squads sometimes run one launcher and one energy weapon rather than two launchers. The ammo economy page covers the shared pool, and the anti-tank page covers the launcher variants specifically.
The slot question
Because the support weapon occupies a stratagem slot, taking one costs you an Eagle or a barrage. That is why the decision is a loadout decision rather than a weapon decision — the stratagem loadout page puts it in context, and the honest answer for most players is that a support weapon plus three stratagems beats four stratagems and a rifle you cannot sustain.
