Helldivers 2 Orbital Stratagems: Cooldown Is the Only Cost
Orbitals charge independently instead of sharing a pool, which means the cost of bringing one is a slot and patience. How to stack them.
The independent timer
Every Orbital has its own cooldown and no shared ammunition. Using a Gatling barrage does not delay your Railcannon. That means the cost of bringing a second Orbital is one stratagem slot and nothing else — a very different price from adding an Eagle, which splits the rearm. The corollary is that Orbitals reward patience rather than timing. An Eagle is a resource you spend; an Orbital is a resource you wait for. So the correct usage pattern is to call the Orbital early and often, on cooldown, rather than saving it for a perfect moment that never arrives.
What the family covers
Fast, small barrages have short cooldowns and clear light infantry. These are the ones to spam; their value is frequency, not damage. Heavy barrages cover a large area for a long time with scattered impacts. They are best against a fixed position or a breach, and worst against a single fast target, because the spread means most of the shells land where the enemy is not. Precision strikes hit one target hard. These are the answer to a Hulk, a Tank, or a Titan that your support weapon is not built for, and they are usually the longest cooldown you will bring. Beams run for a duration and track. They are the most forgiving anti-armour option and the least predictable, because the beam decides what it is killing. The explosion radius page gives the actual footprint of each, which is the number that decides whether a barrage is worth the slot.
The friendly-fire problem
Orbitals are the leading cause of squad deaths from your own team, and the cause is always the same: the barrage was called while a teammate was already in the area. Barrages do not distinguish; the spread reaches behind you. Two rules fix almost all of it. Call the strike outside the direction your squad is moving, and do not throw a long-duration barrage at a position you intend to walk into. Half the value of an Orbital is the ground you deny the enemy — the other half is the fact that it takes a while, which is also why it does not belong on top of your own push.
The build
Two Orbitals, one Eagle, one support weapon covers most missions. On defence, swap the Eagle for a sentry and let the fixed position soak the chaff. The best stratagems page covers the per-faction split, and the Eagle page explains why the shared rearm makes a third Eagle a bad trade.
