Helldivers 2 Planet Hazards: Read the Drop Screen
Heat, cold, ion storms and fire tornadoes change a loadout more than the faction does. What each hazard family takes away and how to plan around it.
Four families of hazard
Visibility hazards — spore clouds, sandstorms, blizzards, night cycles — remove your ability to shoot at range. A squad built around a long-range primary and a scoped support weapon is a squad with no weapons under a sandstorm. Counter: area effects, sentries that do not need to see, and short-range stopping power. Stratagem hazards — ion storms and similar effects disable or delay stratagems while they are active. This is the harshest family because it attacks the four slots you spent the mission planning around. Counter: nothing in the loadout. You wait it out, and you keep a support weapon you can actually hold. Thermal hazards — extreme heat and extreme cold change how energy weapons and heat-based tools behave. Heat makes them build faster; cold makes them build slower. If your kit is laser-heavy, the planet is a loadout decision. Physical hazards — fire tornadoes, meteor showers, volcanic activity. These kill squads that stand still and punish tight formations around an objective.
Why hazard beats faction
Against bugs your anti-armor answer is roughly fixed. Against bots it is roughly fixed. What changes per planet is whether that answer is available at the moment you need it. An ion storm during a Bile Titan fight is more dangerous than the Bile Titan. So read the drop screen in this order: hazards first, faction second, difficulty third. Then pick the stratagems that survive the hazard, and let the faction fill in the rest.
The loadout that survives anything
One weapon that does not need line of sight. One stratagem with a long duration rather than a big hit. One piece of gear that helps you move — the booster split covers which. That core works on every planet, and you build the rest around it.
Hazard and samples
Hazardous planets are usually the ones nobody is farming, which makes them good sample runs: fewer squads competing for the same map, and the rock formation spawns the same way it does anywhere else. Check the level first — super samples start at Extreme regardless of weather.
