Helldivers 2 Friendly Fire: The Stratagems That Kill Squads

Most squad wipes are self-inflicted. Where friendly fire actually comes from, and the three rules that stop it without slowing the team down.

The four causes

Barrages on your own position. A long-duration area strike called onto a point the squad is defending. It kills defenders as efficiently as attackers. Eagles thrown too close. Fast, precise, and easy to misjudge when the enemy is already at contact distance with your teammate. Mines and turrets. Placed where the squad will walk, not where the enemy will walk. A minefield behind your line is a retreat you cannot use. Exosuits. Wide fields of fire and a slow turn, in a squad that is fighting at the same range.

The three rules

Throw forward, never backward. Aim stratagems beyond the squad’s position, in the direction the enemy is coming from. The area behind you is the retreat, and the retreat must stay clean. Say it before you throw it. One word — the stratagem name — gives everyone a chance to step out of the radius. This is the single highest-value habit in the game and almost nobody does it. Do not call a barrage on a position you intend to enter. If the plan is to push, the barrage should land on the far side of the objective, not on it.

The minefield special case

Mines are the most common self-inflicted death after barrages, because they are invisible, persistent, and placed during a fight when everybody is moving. There are two acceptable places for a minefield: on an approach the enemy must use, and nowhere else. If you cannot name the direction the enemy will come from, do not place mines.

Why this matters more at higher difficulty

On low difficulties a friendly-fire death is an inconvenience. On high ones it costs a reinforcement from a limited budget, which means a single misjudged Eagle can end a mission. The reinforce budget page explains the arithmetic. The culture point is worth stating plainly: friendly fire is not a joke mechanic that the game tolerates, and the squad roles page is where the division of fire responsibility belongs. It is a real cost paid out of a shared resource, and the squads that clear high difficulties are the ones where nobody throws anything without saying so.
