How to Kill the Hellborn in Hunt: Showdown
Choke clouds and water bottles are the Hellborn's real answers while dynamite no longer works: how to track it by sound alone.
Stop bringing dynamite
This is the version-aware point that matters. Historically explosives were a Hellborn answer, but a patch made it distinctly more explosive-resistant, so the old “drop dynamite and delete it” routine no longer works. The numbers line up with that: explosive ammunition and thrown explosives both come in at x0.8, i.e. slightly below normal, and it is outright immune to burning ground and poison clouds.
What actually kills it
- Choke clouds / extinguishing gas: x35 — absurdly dominant, and the single most extreme multiplier in the boss damage tables.
- Shrapnel: x2.5 — a strong secondary.
- Water bottles — specifically called out as the current go-to alongside choke, which makes intuitive sense against something that is on fire. Treat that x35 as a community measurement rather than an official figure, but its direction is corroborated by several guides converging on choke and water being the answer while fire and explosives are not. Note it resists its own element: it deals fire damage and shrugs off fire, so do not mirror it.
Tracking and the PvP cost
Activate Dark Sight and listen. Its low roar grows louder as you approach, and it is tracked through audio cues rather than standard clues. Because it roams on the surface instead of sitting in a compound, there is no lair to close — instead you get detected while approaching it. Then comes the real cost: once the fight starts, its roar carries across the map, effectively announcing your position as loudly as a banish would. Kill it efficiently and immediately reposition. As a Wild Target it also skips the normal banishment flow — expect a much faster route to a token than a standard boss, which removes the usual timer you would otherwise use to prepare. Because sound is the entire detection mechanic, audio mistakes decide this fight more than weapon choice, and scouting tools are how you confirm nobody is walking into you while you chase the roar. Multipliers are community-measured and patch-sensitive — verify in-game.
