How to Kill the Butcher in Hunt: Showdown

The Butcher takes 4x from explosive ammunition and near-zero from fire: the real damage split, the melee follow-up, and how to play his frenzy.

Fire is worthless against him — this is the lesson

Two numbers explain almost every failed Butcher attempt. Incendiary rounds hit at roughly x0.1, and he is outright immune to burning ground. Whatever instinct tells you to bring fire bombs here is wrong, and it is wrong by an order of magnitude rather than a little.

What actually does damage

Again, precision matters, because “explosives” hides a big split:

  • Explosive ammunition (blast rounds): x4 — his single best answer and the thing you should build around.
  • Shrapnel: x3 — also excellent.
  • Poison bullets: x2, and the Bomb Lance harpoon: x2 — both strong alternatives if your loadout leans that way.
  • Thrown dynamite and similar ordnance: x0.85 — slightly reduced, no bonus. A heavy bundle still chunks him because its base damage is simply huge, but he is not taking bonus from it, which is why dry OpenAI summaries disagree about sticky bombs. For the sustainable melee follow-up, heavy rending — an axe above all — landing in his recovery windows is what guides converge on, alongside the blast options above.

Playing the frenzy

He enrages as you drain his health, becoming far more aggressive, and several sources describe it triggering in stages with a window you should spend outside the lair. Disengage while you still have distance: because he moves at sprint speed, waiting until he is on you is already too late. Note that he ignites the ground as he moves, so watch oil lamps and tight interiors — in a closed compound the fire plus bleed combination kills faster than he does.

The fight around him

Boss kills are a dinner bell. Positioning during the fight decides whether you extract more than the damage you deal: see the positioning guide for why boss-room deaths are usually PvP deaths, and the solo route guide for sequencing this alone. Multipliers are community-measured and patch-sensitive — verify in-game.
