Hunt 2.9 MMR Decay: What Returning Players Get
Update 2.9 added MMR Decay — returning players get a temporary easier matchmaking modifier that fades as they play. How it works and who it helps.
What the patch actually says
Per the official 2.9 communication, a new MMR Decay system “will apply a temporary matchmaking modifier that reduces difficulty before gradually disappearing as the player completes more matches.” The existing new-player modifier was also redesigned around a similar principle, shifting from an abrupt cutoff at a fixed Bloodline Rank to a smoother curve that prevents inexperienced players from suddenly landing in much harder matches.
What it is not
MMR Decay is a matchmaking modifier, not a change to your underlying MMR. The base rating still follows the same modified OpenSkill algorithm described in Crytek’s official Developer Insight — it is determined by in-game performance, not by your time away. Decay only influences who you are matched against during the re-calibration window; it does not erase or reset your skill rating.
Who benefits
- Returning players after an extended absence, whose rating may no longer reflect current form.
- New players, via the smoothed new-player modifier that no longer snaps off at a rank threshold.
How to use the window
Treat the decay period as low-stakes calibration. Because the modifier eases your lobbies while it lasts, it is a good time to relearn the 2.9 hidden-information changes and rebuild habits without the full difficulty tax. The modifier fades with play, so the longer you stay, the more your matches normalize — and the more your real performance, not the decay cushion, decides your lobbies.
Why it exists
Large updates pull both new and returning players back in, which temporarily disrupts the matchmaking ecosystem. Decay is Crytek’s way of softening the re-entry without permanently distorting the ranking. It is a band-aid for calibration, not a new rank tier.
