Hunt Showdown Movement: Sprint, Walk, Crouch and Who Hears
Three speeds, three noise radii. What each one costs you and the situations where being heard is the correct trade.
Speed is a noise setting
Hunt has three movement speeds and each one produces a different radius of audible footsteps. Sprinting is audible far beyond a compound. Walking is audible inside a compound. Crouching is quiet enough that a player has to be close. That is the entire movement vocabulary. Choosing a speed is choosing who knows you are coming.
Sprint is a statement
Sprinting says you have decided that time is worth more than surprise. It is correct when crossing open ground with no cover, when running from a fight you cannot win, and when the boss is being banished and you are late. It is wrong when approaching a compound that has defenders in it, because they will hear you at a distance where you cannot yet see the window they are watching from.
Walk is the default
Walking is the speed at which most Hunt fights should be fought. It is quiet enough to keep information advantage at any real distance and fast enough to reposition inside a compound. The exception is soft ground, where walking is close to silent, and hard surfaces, where it is not.
Crouch is for the last twenty metres
Crouching removes footstep noise and costs you movement speed and the ability to shoot accurately while moving. It is the right choice for the final approach, for peeking under a window, and for repositioning while someone is actively listening. It is the wrong choice for crossing open ground, where you become a slow target with no ability to break line of sight.
Standing still is a tool
The quietest state in Hunt is not moving. Players who are listening for you will hear footsteps stop, and that silence tells them something too - usually that you have stopped at a door. This is why a common high-level pattern is to stop moving, wait, and let the other player reveal themselves by moving first.
Sound you cannot turn off
Crouching does not silence a vault, a ladder, a weapon swap, a heal, or a reload. Those are separate events with their own noise. A quiet movement state does not make the rest of your kit silent.
Practical rules
Approach on soft ground at a walk. Crouch for the last stretch. Sprint only to cross ground you cannot cross quietly anyway. And when you must make noise, make it somewhere you are not going to be.
