Hunt Showdown Wall Penetration: Shooting Through Cover
Some cover is not cover. How ammunition types change what you can shoot through and why wooden walls are a false friend.
Penetration is an ammunition property
Whether a bullet goes through a wall depends on the ammunition type, not on the weapon. Long ammunition penetrates best, medium less, compact least. A wall that stops a compact round is a wall a long round treats as a suggestion. That is why two rifles can feel completely different in the same compound despite similar damage on paper.
Wood is thin, metal is not
Plank walls, fences, and shutters are far more permeable than they look. Corrugated metal, stone, and brick are not. The visual reading is usually wrong, because a rusted metal sheet looks flimsier than a solid plank wall and behaves the opposite way. Learning the material map of a compound is as valuable as learning its layout.
What penetration costs
A bullet that passes through cover loses some of its energy. That can mean the difference between a kill and a wound, which is why shooting through a wall at long range is a poor use of a round. At close range, the loss is small enough that shooting through a wall is often the correct play, especially against a player who is healing or reviving behind it.
The information value
The most underrated use of penetration is not the kill, it is the confirmation. Firing into a wall a player is hiding behind, and hearing them react, tells you where they are and whether they are healing. That intelligence is often worth more than the damage.
Countering it
If you are being shot through cover, do not assume the cover is safe and stay behind it. Move laterally so the wall you are behind is no longer the wall the shot is aimed at. The players who die to penetration are the ones who trusted a wooden wall because it looked solid.
Building for it
A long-ammunition weapon is a wall-shooting weapon. A compact weapon is not, and treating it as one wastes rounds and gives away position. If your build relies on close-range work in compounds, penetration matters less than rate of fire. If your build expects to fight defenders through walls, penetration is the whole plan.
