Hunt: Showdown Beginner Guide (2026): First Hunts

Start with the Winfield M1873C and Caldwell Conversion, grab Necromancer first, and fear the sound, not the guns. How to survive your first 20 hours.

The biggest beginner mistake in Hunt is gear fear — hoarding expensive weapons instead of learning the maps. The economy is designed around losing hunters, so cheap loadouts that let you take risks and rebuild fast are the correct path. Your first 20 hours are about staying alive and learning, not maximizing kills.

The starter loadout

  • Primary: Winfield M1873C ($35–$56). Fast lever action, manageable recoil, compact ammo that is cheap and easy to restock. You will use it for most of your first 50 matches.
  • Secondary: Caldwell Conversion pistol. Strong sidearm damage and access to FMJ ammo, which punches through wood and light cover when your main runs dry.
  • Tools: Knife and Lockpicks. The knife does silent melee kills on AI grunts; lockpicks open locked doors and chests for free loot that rebuilds your bankroll.
  • Consumables: First Aid Kit and Vitality Shot. Recover serious damage between engagements; prioritize survival over offensive consumables early.

Traits to take first

These four matter more than any weapon upgrade in your first 20 hours:

  • Necromancer — revive teammates at range, or self-revive when solo. It saves more hunts than any offensive trait.
  • Resilience — get revived at full health instead of partial.
  • Vigilant — spot traps and ammo boxes in dark environments (night maps and dense compounds).
  • Vulture — loot bodies faster and earn extra Hunt Dollars, building your currency early.

Do not spread trait points across every interesting option. Lock in Necromancer first.

Sound is everything

Sprinting is the loudest thing you routinely do; crouch-walking is quiet; standing still makes no noise; unsuppressed gunfire carries across compounds. Noise traps — crows, dogs, bottles, bells, chains — alert enemies in two stages (alerted, then triggered), and each hunter has their own threshold. Crouch around them or shoot the animal to silence it.

Modes and maps

Three modes: Bounty Hunt (main), Bounty Clash (fast PvP), Soul Survivor (solo). Maps: Stillwater Bayou (swamp, water splashing is loud), Lawson Delta (long sightlines, long ammo dominant), DeSalle (largest, most vertical). Extraction is a 5-second channel at one of three edge points per map — enemies camp them.

Economy and progression

Earn Hunt Dollars from clues, boss kills, banishes, extracting bounties, and looting hunters; dying earns nothing. Free hunters are a built-in safety net. Weapon variants unlock by using a weapon family or via workbenches (blueprints give a random unlock; gun oil unlocks the next variant of the weapon you hold). Do not prestige early — learn the game first.
