When a clinch happens

If you and an opponent collide while both armed and in range, you enter a brief struggle instead of a normal exchange. On PC you mash the attack button; on controller you flick the stick. Win the grapple and your opponent is staggered long enough for a clean hit. Lose it and you eat damage instead. Clinches also happen unintentionally if you hold forward and mash attack in melee — so if you do not want one, stop shoving into the enemy’s body.

What decides the outcome

The clinch is a contest of Strength and combat skill. The larger the gap between your Strength (and weapon skill) and the enemy’s, the easier you win. That is why a low-Strength early Henry can get stuffed by a burly bandit, and why investing in Strength pays off beyond just bigger weapons. Perks reinforce this: Clinch Master (Warfare tree) improves your grapple, and a high Strength stat simply tilts the roll in your favor.

How to use it on purpose

Against a heavily armored foe who blocks everything, forcing a clinch can be the cleanest way to land damage — win it, take the free hit, then reset. It also works as a panic button when surrounded: a clinch breaks the enemy’s rhythm and the stagger buys you space to reposition. For group fights, read fighting multiple enemies on using that space. The clinch is not a substitute for the Master Strike — that is your precision counter — but it is a reliable brute-force option when the angles are not opening up.
