Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Horse Riding: Getting There Alive

Horse stats decide how you travel and how you fight from the saddle. What to look for and when to dismount.

The horse is a stat block

Horses differ in speed, stamina, carrying capacity, and courage. Those four numbers decide whether your horse is transport, a pack animal, or a liability in a fight. Courage matters more than new players expect: a frightened horse throws you, and being thrown in the middle of an ambush is worse than arriving late.

Carrying capacity

Horse saddlebags are the answer to the inventory limit. Loot you cannot carry on foot can be carried on the horse, which makes it the difference between one profitable trip and two. Overloading the horse slows it, so capacity is a trade rather than a free upgrade.

Riding in combat

Fighting from horseback is fast and dangerous. A charge with a polearm or a heavy weapon can end an armoured opponent, and it is nearly impossible to block. The risk is that you cannot turn quickly and the horse can be killed. Fighting from the saddle works against scattered opponents and fails against groups with spears.

When to dismount

Before entering a town, before a conversation, and before a fight in tight terrain. A horse in a forest or a village is a liability you are sitting on. Dismounting also prevents the worst outcome: being thrown while surrounded.

Travel and stamina

Galloping drains stamina and the horse needs to recover. Pacing the ride is the difference between arriving ready and arriving with a blown horse. For long journeys, a steady canter with occasional sprints is faster overall than constant galloping.

Keeping the horse

Stables, feeding, and care all matter. A neglected horse performs worse, and losing one is expensive. The practical habit is to stable the horse in towns you visit often rather than leaving it on a road where it can be stolen or killed.
