Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 Mutt: The Dog That Fights

Your dog is a free combatant with commands. How to use him in a fight and how to stop him chasing everything.

A second body with a brain of its own

Mutt is a companion who follows, attacks, and can be given commands. In a fight he occupies an enemy’s attention, which is exactly what a player fighting two opponents needs. He is not controllable in the way a weapon is. He has his own targeting and his own idea of when to engage, which is why some players find him a liability and others find him indispensable.

Commands worth knowing

The useful commands are the ones that change his position: send him at a target, call him off, and tell him to stay. Those three cover most situations. The command that matters most is calling him off. A dog chasing a fleeing bandit across a field is a dog not helping you with the two still swinging.

Fighting with a dog

The value is attention. When Mutt engages one opponent, that opponent turns, and a turned opponent is one you can hit from the side. Do not wait for him to win. He will rarely kill anything quickly, and treating him as a damage source wastes the opening he creates.

Outside combat

Mutt can retrieve and can help you find things. His nose is a utility tool as much as a combat one, and using it is often faster than searching. He also affects how NPCs react to you, which is worth knowing before you bring him into a formal conversation.

The nuisance cases

Hunting, chasing, and getting stuck. A dog that runs at every animal is a dog that announces your position to every bandit in the region. Keeping him close in stealth situations is the difference between an ambush and a warning.

Feeding and keeping him

He needs care, and neglecting him has consequences. The bookkeeping is minor but it is real, and a neglected dog is a worse companion. The overall verdict: bring him for combat and exploration, call him off for stealth, and accept that occasionally he will do something stupid. He is still a net gain.
