Lance Guide: Guarding as Offence, Not Retreat

Lance is not a low-damage turtle. How the three-hit poke, Perfect Guard into Power Clash, and counter play turn defence into constant damage pressure.

The poke chain is the plan

The Lance’s identity is a repeating thrust combo that keeps you planted and keeps damage flowing. It is not flashy, and that is the point — every other weapon spends time repositioning or recovering, and the Lance spends that time attacking. Where players go wrong is treating the pokes as filler while waiting for a big move. There is no big move. The pokes are the weapon.

Perfect Guard and Power Clash

The Lance is one of the six weapons that can guard, and a Perfect Guard — the guard pressed exactly as the attack lands — takes no health and no stamina, and can trigger a Power Clash against certain heavy attacks. A clash is a mash prompt that ends with the monster reeling. The distinction that matters: normal guarding drains stamina and pushes you back, Perfect Guard costs nothing. Learning the timing converts your defence from a tax into a free opening.

Counter instead of dodge

The Lance’s answer to a predictable attack is to counter, staying in place rather than rolling away. This is why the weapon suits players who like deterministic fights: you learn the monster’s attack list, you choose the answer for each, and you never leave the pocket. Against multi-hit and breath attacks, though, counters fail — and recognising which attacks cannot be countered is the actual skill gap.

Stamina is your real health bar

Guard skills, Constitution, and stamina management matter more on the Lance than raw defence, because a Lance that runs out of stamina during a block gets staggered and punished. Building only for damage is a common and painful mistake.

Skills worth the slots

Offensive Guard rewards correct guard timing with an attack boost. Guard and Guard Up widen what you can stand in front of. Because your hit count is high, element and status investment both perform well here.

Should you play it

If you enjoy learning a monster’s entire attack list and having a correct answer for each, the Lance is the most rewarding weapon in the game for that mindset. If you need big visual payoffs per swing, it will feel flat no matter how good your numbers are.

Compare options in the weapon type overview, read combat basics for the guard framework, and check armor skills for the guard-and-stamina build path.
