Phasmophobia Evidence Types: All 7 Clues Explained

Every ghost is identified by three of seven evidence types. What reveals each one, the tool it needs, and the condition that makes it show.

Identification in Phasmophobia is a process of elimination built on evidence. There are seven evidence types, and each of the 30 ghosts produces a fixed set of three (with one known exception, covered on the Mimic, Obake, Deildegast page). Tick two in your journal and it grays out every ghost that cannot produce both; tick the third and usually one name remains. This page is the reference for what each clue is and how to pull it.

The seven evidence types

  • EMF Level 5 — read with the EMF Reader at a recent interaction (a moved door, a thrown object). A spike to 5 is the clue; ordinary interactions can read lower even on the right ghost, so check several.
  • Spirit Box — turn off the room lights, power the box, and ask a recognized question near the ghost. A spoken answer is the clue. Range depends on tier (3/4/5 metres). Some ghosts require the asker to be alone in the room.
  • Ultraviolet — a UV flashlight or glowstick reveals handprints, fingerprints, or footprints on doors, switches, and windows.
  • Freezing Temperatures — a thermometer reading strictly below 1°C (or clearly below 0°C on the imprecise Tier I scale) confirms it. Rooms cool over time as the ghost lingers, so give it a moment.
  • Ghost Orbs — visible only through a video camera with night vision, as small bright particles drifting in the favorite room. Turning the lights off helps.
  • Ghost Writing — text scrawls into a Ghost Writing Book you leave near the ghost’s room.
  • D.O.T.S. Projector — a ghost silhouette crossing the laser grid, seen on a camera or video screen when the ghost enters its D.O.T.S. state.

Two need a camera

Both Ghost Orbs and D.O.T.S require a video camera or feed, so set cameras early. Freezing Temperatures needs the room genuinely below freezing, not merely cold, so let the thermometer settle before ruling it out.

How this connects

On Nightmare and Insanity, one or two of these are hidden, which is why behavior tells and the identification order guide matter more than ever. Voice-driven evidence (Spirit Box, and the Parabolic Microphone) is covered separately on the sound evidence page. And if you are still unsure how many ghosts exist to sort through, the ghost count page explains why you may have seen 24, 27, 28, or 29 elsewhere.
