Sound Evidence: Spirit Box and Parabolic Mic

Two evidence types are voice-driven: the Spirit Box and the Parabolic Microphone. How to use a clear mic and the alone-in-the-room rule.

Two of Phasmophobia’s seven evidence types depend on your voice: the Spirit Box and the Parabolic Microphone. They are the only clues that require you to speak, and that makes them both powerful and dangerous. This page explains how to use them correctly, as a companion to the evidence types reference.

Spirit Box

The Spirit Box produces a spoken answer when you ask a recognized question in a dark room near the ghost. The mechanics that matter:

  • Range by tier — 3 metres (Tier I), 4 (Tier II), 5 (Tier III). Move through the room and repeat the test near recent activity.
  • The alone rule — some ghosts only answer when the asker is alone in the room, so send teammates outside for that test.
  • Recognition indicator — the device shows whether your input registered, which saves you from guessing if it heard you.
  • Text mode — a voice-recognition alternative lets you pick questions if you prefer not to speak.

Parabolic Microphone

The Parabolic Microphone picks up ghost whispers and footsteps through walls, which helps locate the ghost room on large maps and can surface audio evidence that the journal counts. It is also the tool most affected by the Moroi.

The Moroi risk

The Moroi can curse a player through the Spirit Box or Parabolic Microphone, doubling that player’s passive sanity drain — and light or fire cannot defend against the curse (see sanity management). So if you suspect a Moroi, limit voice-tool use to what identification strictly requires.

Why this connects to identification

Voice clues are often the last evidence you gather because they are disruptive and risky, but they are also the ones that break ties on the identification order. And because the Mimic fakes orbs and the Obake hides UV (see the liars page), a clean Spirit Box or microphone read can be the clue that settles the name. The ghost count page is where the 30-type roster lives that all this identification sorts through.
