Space Marine 2 Helbrute: The Dreadnought You Have to Flank
The Helbrute is a Chaos Terminus that wins a straight fight. How to use its slow turn, punish its reloads, and avoid the duel it wants.
What it does
It combines heavy ranged fire with a melee threat, which means it covers both the distance you would retreat to and the distance you would close to. That is why it feels unfair the first time: there is no safe range. The compensating weakness is speed. It turns slowly and commits to attacks, so the counter is angles and patience rather than damage.
How to fight it
Never duel it in the open. Its ranged attack is designed for exactly that. Fight it from cover, broken into short exposures rather than a sustained exchange. Move around it, not away from it. Retreating keeps you in its firing line and gives it time. Circling forces it to turn, and a turning Helbrute is not shooting. Punish the commitment. After a heavy attack or a melee swing there is a window. That is when the squad does damage — not during its firing cycle. Watch the escort. Helbrutes appear with Chaos infantry, and Cultists or Rubric Marines shooting from the flank will kill a squad that is entirely focused on the big target.
Where it appears
In Operations it is a Demerium threat, and in the campaign it appears as a set-piece boss in the later missions. It is not a mission-ending Terminus like the Hive Tyrant — it is an elite that turns a corridor fight into a problem. That distinction matters for how you spend resources. A Helbrute does not justify emptying every cooldown, but it does justify grenades and a couple of Krak if the squad is already damaged.
The squad answer
Ranged classes do the work. Melta at close range is efficient against it, precision weapons punish the exposed phases, and melee classes should be clearing the escort rather than attacking the hull. The best weapons page covers which families handle armour, and the enemy list places the Helbrute among the other Chaos threats — including the Terminator variants that arrive in the same missions and demand the same answer.
