Space Marine 2 Carnifex: Dodging the Charge
The Carnifex is a Terminus brute that appears on Substantial and above. Why corners kill you here and how to punish the recovery window.
Where it shows up
It appears in Operations on the Kadaku missions at Substantial difficulty and above, and in the campaign as a set-piece encounter. It is not a boss with a health bar at the end of a mission — it is an elite that can appear during one, which is why it kills squads that were not expecting a Terminus.
The fight
It charges. A straight-line commitment with a wind-up. Dodge sideways, not backwards — backwards keeps you in the line it is travelling along. It sweeps. A wide melee arc that catches players trying to circle it too tightly. Give it distance rather than hugging it. It recovers. After a committed attack there is a window where it is stationary and vulnerable. That window is the whole fight: everything else is staying alive until it appears. The mistake is treating it like a Majoris. Majoris enemies are parry-and-execute targets; a Carnifex will punish an attempted parry with damage, and the correct response to most of its attacks is movement.
Corners
The single biggest cause of death here is fighting it with a wall behind you. The charge covers ground fast, and a squad that retreats into a corner has removed its own ability to dodge. So the positioning rule is simple: keep the arena open behind you, and rotate around the boss rather than backing away from it. That applies to the whole squad — one player pinned in a corner is usually a down.
Squad answer
Concentrated damage during the recovery window, and somebody watching the adds. A Carnifex fight with Tyranids spawning around it is a fight where the boss is not the main problem. Melee classes should not chase it. The Assault build in particular tends to jump at a Terminus and eat a sweep; the value there is repositioning, not damage.
What it teaches
That Terminus enemies are priority-target problems rather than duels. The enemy list sorts the roster by threat tier, and the parry timing page explains which attacks are worth attempting to parry at all — a distinction that saves a lot of health against this thing.
