Space Marine 2 Heldrake: The Reliquary Boss
The Heldrake ends Reliquary and spends most of the fight out of reach. Why the catacomb approach matters more than the boss itself.
The problem with an aerial boss
A flying target removes most of your kit from the equation. Melee classes contribute almost nothing while it is airborne, and a Heavy or Sniper has to track a moving target instead of holding a lane. That is why the fight feels chaotic rather than difficult — the usual roles invert. The practical answer is patience and cover. The Heldrake’s threat comes from its passes rather than from a sustained melee, so the fight is really about not being in the open when it commits, and taking damage windows when it is close or stationary rather than trying to chip it at range. Do not stand in the middle of the arena watching it circle. Cover blocks the pass, gives you a moment to deal with the Chaos infantry that spawn alongside it, and keeps your armour intact for the phase where the boss is actually reachable.
The mission is the real difficulty
Reliquary is the Thousand Sons mission, fought through catacombs: tight spaces, limited sightlines, and Rubric Marines that teleport. Armour drains from angles nobody is watching long before the boss appears, and a squad that arrives at the Heldrake on two segments each has already lost. So the mission rule is spacing. In a corridor, the player in front takes the damage and the player behind cannot help. Stagger the formation so that a teleport behind the group is answered by someone facing backwards, and clear the ranged enemies before pushing the objective. For the units involved, see the enemy list. For why Chaos missions punish spacing more than Tyranid ones, the Operations list breaks it down by map.
What the fight rewards
A squad that respects cover and clears adds. A squad that has a Heavy or Sniper to punish the stationary windows. And a squad that does not panic when the boss leaves — the correct response to a Heldrake breaking off is to reset the arena, not to chase it. This is also the mission where the Mortal Wound economy bites hardest. Arriving wounded is normal here, so the mortal wounds and stimms page is worth reading before you queue: knowing when to spend a Stimm and when to fight through is the difference between a clear and a wipe on the final phase.
