Space Marine 2 Hive Tyrant: The Decapitation Boss Fight

The Hive Tyrant ends Operation 2 on Kadaku. Why the arena is the real fight, how to read its leap and charge, and when to ignore it.

Why the arena decides it

The fight is not a duel. Tyranids keep spawning while the Tyrant is alive, and those adds are not decoration: they block your dodge lanes, they interrupt your executions, and they are what actually kills you while you are watching the boss. So the fight has two states. When the Tyrant is committed to an attack, it is your damage window. When it is not, your job is the swarm, because clearing the arena is what makes the next window usable. A squad that spends the whole fight on the boss ends up cornered by Gaunts with a Mortal Wound each.

Reading its two commitment attacks

The leap. It covers distance fast and lands where you were standing a moment ago. A sideways dodge on the approach beats a backwards one, because backwards keeps you in the landing zone. The charge. A straight-line commitment with a longer run-up. It is the most generous window in the fight: dodge to the side, then unload while it recovers. Do not try to parry the charge — save the parry for its melee strings, which are the attacks designed to be parried. That distinction is the whole fight. Its melee combo is a parry-and-Gun-Strike problem; its leap and charge are dodge problems. Mixing them up is the most common way to lose a full armour bar in one exchange. The parry timing page covers the window by weapon type, and blue versus red attacks explains which telegraphs can be countered at all.

Squad roles

One player owns the adds. Usually the Assault or the Vanguard, whose mobility lets them clear a wave and get back. One player owns the boss damage. Sniper or Heavy, on the commitment windows only. One player holds the middle. Bulwark’s banner and Tactical’s Auspex are what turn a messy phase back into a fight you control. Random groups usually have all three doing the boss, which is why random groups wipe here. Say the job out loud before the arena.

The reward for learning it

Decapitation is the best repeatable boss mission in the game: fixed encounter, predictable spawns, and a boss that can be melted quickly by a coordinated squad. That makes it the standard farming run for Accolades and Requisition once the fight is solved, and the reason it appears in almost every efficiency route. If you are going to learn one boss properly, learn this one — see the Operations list for where it sits, and the Siege mode for the wave version of the same instincts.
