Space Marine 2 Parry Timing: Fencing vs Balanced vs Block

How the three melee defence types change your perfect-parry window in Space Marine 2, with the real timing differences and which one to use.

How the parry actually registers

Space Marine 2 judges the animation, not the button press. When you tap the defence button your Marine raises his arm into a block, and the perfect-parry window is a slice of that raise animation. The blue flash and ping are only a heads-up that a parryable attack is coming — pressing the instant they appear is usually too late. You want to commit a beat before the blow lands, watching the enemy body commit to the swing rather than the icon.

The three defence types

  • Fencing — the longest, most forgiving perfect-parry window, and it opens from the very first frame of the raise. This is why most guides point new players at a Fencing weapon first. The trade-off is lower raw weapon stats.
  • Balanced — a normal window, but with a startup delay after the animation begins before the perfect part opens. Community frame data puts that delay around 165 ms. You must press earlier than Fencing timing; late inputs get punished.
  • Block — there is no perfect-parry window at all. Attempted parries become a plain block. Land a swing right after a clean block and you build the Adrenaline Surge for a heavy area hit that restores armour. Different playstyle, no Gun Strike from a parry. The Season One update (26 September 2024) trimmed the Fencing window from 30 to 20 frames (~0.33 s at 60 fps) and left the tail frames as a vulnerability window, specifically to stop parry-spam. Treat any exact millisecond figure you see as community-measured and patch-dependent; the relative ordering — Fencing easiest, Balanced tighter with a delay, Block no parry — is the part that is stable.

Widening the window

Perks matter. The Duellist perk (a Vanguard class perk, and a prestige option for Assault and Heavy) adds up to +50% to perfect parry and block windows, which turns a tight Balanced weapon into something far more manageable. If you are still dropping parries, the next step is reading the attack colour — see blue vs red attacks — and the dedicated walkthrough on why parry keeps failing.
