STALKER 2 Radiation: Sources, Symptoms and Cures

Radiation comes from artifacts as often as from anomalies, and it stacks. How the suit stat works, what to carry, and when to drop an artifact.

Where it comes from

Artifacts. The common pattern is a good property paid for with radiation. Equipping three of those without protection means a permanent drain you stop noticing until your health is falling for no visible reason. Anomaly fields. Chemical and thermal fields leave contaminated ground, and standing in it adds exposure continuously. Specific locations. Some interiors and industrial areas are contaminated regardless of what you are carrying.

How the suit stat works

Suits have a radiation protection value, and it offsets what your artifacts and environment produce. When protection exceeds the incoming rate, nothing accumulates. When it does not, you take a slow drain that eventually becomes visible as reduced health and stamina. That means the correct question is not “how much protection does this suit have” but “how much protection do I need for what I am carrying”. A suit with modest protection and two artifacts is fine; a suit with modest protection and four radioactive artifacts is a death sentence with a delay.

What to carry

Anti-radiation drugs are cheap and they are the first thing to buy when you have coupons to spare. Vodka works and is everywhere. Both are a temporary solution; neither replaces the suit stat.

The decision that matters

When radiation starts accumulating, you have three options: take a drug, swap an artifact for a cleaner one, or leave the area. The wrong option is to ignore it because the health bar is not moving fast. Dropping a radioactive artifact you cannot cover is almost always correct. A stat bonus that costs you constant drug use is a stat bonus you are renting — the artifact page covers which properties actually justify the cost.

Radiation and emissions

The two interact. Emissions displace enemies and leave areas contaminated for a while, so the period after an event is the worst time to be exploring a field without protection. The emission page covers the timing, and the armor page covers which suits solve this permanently.
