STALKER 2 Bolts: The Cheapest Tool in the Zone

Throwing a bolt sets off an anomaly at a safe distance. Why the most basic item in the game is the one that keeps you alive in fields.

What a bolt does

Thrown, it lands, and if it lands inside a triggerable anomaly, the anomaly fires. You see where it is, what shape it is, and whether it moves. That is a detection tool that costs nothing and cannot run out in any way that matters. Nothing else in your inventory has that ratio of information to risk.

How to use it

Throw before you walk. In an unfamiliar field, throw ahead and watch. Two or three bolts will map the safe line through most fields. Throw into doorways and around corners in anomaly-dense buildings, where the field is inside a room you cannot see into. Throw at a suspicious patch of ground. Anomalies often have a visual tell, and a bolt confirms it without a health cost. Throw where you intend to stand, not just where you intend to walk. An anomaly that triggers behind you is still an anomaly.

Where players go wrong

The failure mode is treating bolts as a beginner item to be replaced by the detector. The detector tells you where artifacts are; it does not tell you where the anomalies are. They answer different questions, and a player with a good detector and no bolts still walks into fields blind. The other mistake is throwing once and assuming the field is mapped. Anomalies move. A route that was safe on the way in can be different on the way out, particularly in fields with moving types — the anomaly types page explains which ones shift.

The discipline

Make it a habit rather than a decision: any time you are about to enter ground you have not walked in this session, throw first. That is the whole technique, and it is why experienced players look calm in fields that kill new players — they are not better at spotting anomalies, they are better at testing for them. Pair it with a detector sweep on the way in, and a field becomes a route instead of a gamble. The detector page covers the sweep, and artifact hunting is what the route is for.
