Stalker 2 Sniping: Distance, Holdover and Moving After
The Zone rewards a rifle and punishes standing still. How to shoot at range and why the second shot is the problem.
Range is safety
Most threats in Stalker 2 want to close distance. A scoped rifle denies them that, which makes long-range engagement the safest way to resolve an encounter. The corollary is that sniping is not about damage, it is about never letting the fight start at the range the enemy prefers.
Holdover and zeroing
Bullets drop over distance, and scoped rifles have an adjustable zero. A target beyond your zero needs to be aimed above; a target inside it needs to be aimed below. Most missed shots at range are holdover errors rather than aim errors, especially on the first shot of an engagement when the target is standing still and the shot should be easy.
The first shot matters most
After you fire, the enemy knows approximately where you are, and human enemies will flank while mutants will charge. That makes the first shot the only one taken from a position of advantage. Which means: do not take low-percentage first shots. Wait for the target to stop, take the shot, then move.
Moving after firing
Repositioning does not need to be dramatic. Moving one position along a ridge or into the next window is enough to make the enemy’s approach arrive where you are not. Players who stay in the same spot after firing die to flankers, and flankers are exactly what human enemies send.
Ammunition
Penetration matters against armour, and long-range shots lose energy through cover. Do not shoot at a target behind hard cover at range and expect the ammunition to solve it. Save the good rounds for the targets that need them, and use the common ammunition for soft targets and for the AI that walks in the open.
What sniping is bad at
Interiors, close terrain, and anything that lets an enemy approach unseen. A scoped rifle in a building is a liability, which is why the secondary matters.
