STALKER 2 Combat Tips: Winning Without Losing the Kit
The Zone punishes standing and shooting. Cover, burst discipline, and knowing when to walk away are worth more than accuracy.
The four rules
Cover before accuracy. Standing in the open to line up a better shot is the most common way to die in the Zone. A hit from behind cover beats a perfect shot from the open. Burst, do not spray. Recoil in this game is real and sustained fire wastes most of a magazine. Short bursts at range, full auto only at contact distance. Aim for the head on humans. Armoured bodies absorb rounds, and ammunition is expensive. The head is a shorter fight and a cheaper one. Move after firing. Enemies reposition to flank, and a player who stays where they fired is a player who gets flanked by the second enemy while dealing with the first.
Fighting mutants
Mutants are a different problem: they close distance, they do not use cover, and several of them are faster than you. The answer is terrain. Fight in doorways, on stairs, and around corners where only one can reach you at a time. Open ground against a pack of dogs is a losing fight regardless of your weapon. For the specific types — and what each one forces you to do — the mutants page is the reference. The Bloodsucker in particular punishes the instinct to chase: let it come to you, covered.
The economics of a fight
Every engagement costs: Ammunition, which is money. Weapon durability, which is repair money. Medical items, which are money. Your armour’s condition, which is the largest number of the four. So the correct question before a fight is not “can I win” but “is what I gain worth what this costs”. A pack of dogs with no loot is a fight to avoid. A human squad with gear is worth the ammunition. That calculation is why the coupons page matters more than any weapon stat: you cannot buy your way out of a bad economy.
When to disengage
If you are taking damage and have no angle, leave. The Zone does not punish retreat; it punishes standing still. Break line of sight, move to terrain that blocks pursuit, and re-engage only on your terms — the stealth page covers how to break contact against humans. A player who retreats from three fights and wins the fourth finishes a session richer than one who wins three and dies in the fourth.
